What are Indirect object pronouns? ■ Indirect object pronouns tell to whom or for whom an action is performed. ■ Indirect object pronouns are used to accompany or replace an indirect object. ■ A phrase (a ella, a el, a nosotros, a Roberto etc) will be added to sentences either to clarify or add emphasis. The “a” let’s you know to whom the action is directed.

Where do I put Indirect Objects? ● They go IN FRONT OF THE VERB ● Also, they go IN FRONT OF DIRECT OBJECTS (when applicable)
12
Try the following sentence... I wrote you a letter = Yo ____________ escribi una carta.
13
Respuesta: I wrote you a letter = Yo te escribi una carta.
14
Next: I wrote you guys (Uds) a letter = Yo ________ escribi una carta.

Direct Objects & Indirect Objects Together
20
You can use direct objects together in the same sentence. Mom: When are you finally going to write me a thank you note? Hijo: I’m going to write you it now!
21
“I’m going to write you (IO) it (DO) now” ● Just like in English, the indirect object will precede the Direct Object ● Both the IO & the DO will go before the verb in Spanish. ○ (I you it will write!)
22
Try this: Ella da su comida a su amiga. (she gives her food to her friend) Ella ________ ______________ da. (She gives her it)
23
Ella se la da.
24
Das el lapiz a mi? (Will you give me the pencil? )
25
Me lo das?

Problems with “les and le” A.The indirect object pronouns le and les create a significant problem of clarity in Spanish. Look at the following two sentences below. Although grammatically correct, they are ambiguous because le and les can mean multiple different people. Ella le escribió una carta. Ella les escribió una carta. B. Therefore, a prepositional phrase is often added to elucidate the meaning. Ella le escribió a Juan una carta. Ella le escribió a su hermana una carta. Ella le escribió a Ud. una carta.
27
Problems with “le and les” and “lo/los/la/las” A. When you have the above combo: a. he gave him the letter = Ella da la carta a el. = Ella le la da. b. Because “le la” is difficult to pronounce, change “le” to “se” c. When there’s LEs or LE with a DO, Change it SE!
