RESEARCH OBJECTIVES Find causes and effects of food waste. Find possible solutions created at the local and nationwide level. Transfenation as an example of these solutions. Provide an idea of how people can contribute to the decrease of food waste.
3
FOOD WASTE Every year 1.3 billion tons of food are thrown out as waste around world. In the United States alone around 288 billion pounds are thrown out. Every year 43.1 million Americans are uncertain when their next meal is going to be.
4
FOOD WASTE One third of the food is wasted globally. Not only food is wasted. The resources as well as the emissions produced by the production resources were wasted in vain.
5
FOOD WASTE Food is wasted all throughout the production chain. There is a difference between how medium- and high-income countries and low-income countries waste food. In medium- and high-income countries food is mostly wasted at the consumer level. A large loss may also occur early in the food supply chain. In low-income countries food is lost in the early and middle stages of the food supply.

TRASNFERNATION Governments as well as private and nonprofit organizations work tirelessly to stop food waste. A major setback has been moving food from places that have to much to it to the ones that need it. Organizations with a food surplus may be willing to give it away. However there isn’t an incentive big enough for them to pay for the transportation.
7
TRASNFERNATION Transfernation is a nonprofit organization that connects organizations that have extra food with organizations that distribute food to people in need. Volunteers sing up and when need it they are contacted to go pick up food from one organization and deliver it to another. They also help organizations host events to give out the extra food that they have.
8
TRASNFERNATION As of now they have partnered with over 50 organizations. They have helped with over 250 events. They helped save more that 12,500 pounds of food.
9
TRASNFERNATION In the day of age when more mobile apps and technological platforms are being released to make our lives easier they have figured out a way to make volunteering for good cause easier too. Transfernation provides solutions to eliminate food waste in a very distinctive manner. One of the things that influenced to the creation of Transfernation was the fact that there is no incentive for companies to give away surplus food.
10
TRASNFERNATION Transfernation is helping to close that gap by giving people a way to connect and work together to help the ones in need, have a plate of food on their table. What Transfernation has done is not easy task. They work off two existing infrastructures and the merging of both was not easy. They work with corporations with extra food, pantries and other distribution services and had to match them to delivery services. It wasn’t easy because they all have their own agendas but they succeeded and were able to bring a platform to the people who want to help.

CONCLUSION Food waste is a serious problem not just in America but around the world. Unlike other social problems were their existence is question food waste is a real problem. People need to come together to solve it. It can be started at the consumer level.
