What is Consensus? Definition: Widespread Agreement

You hear the air-raid siren. You turn on the TV and all stations are broadcasting an emergency news bulletin: “Various coordinated chemical attacks using the VX Nerve agent have been launched around the world” The announcement directs citizens to immediately proceed to fallout shelters. The Scene

Exposure to outside air or water sources will lead to death. You have too many people for a shelter that is equipped with food, water, and oxygen to last for five persons for 6 months. The Problem

Rules Select Your Person From Your Facilitator Every person in the group must speak The entire group must come to a consensus on who to keep and who to remove from the shelter. VOTING AND TRADING ARE NOT ALLOWED. Please use respectful language. You have 30 MINUTES to make your decision (five people in the shelter) or everyone will die…

Communication Did your group communicate well? Were each team member’s thoughts considered equally? What communication tools did you use? In hindsight, what communication tools do you wish you had used?

Value What do you value in a team member? Traits that are similar to your own, or traits that are different from yours? Did the traits you valued in this exercise really matter in the end? What Role did the idea of diversity play? Do you values stay the same or do they change depending on the group?
