4 PREPARATION: RESEARCH Background guide General knowledge / background knowledge History of the case Present actions Present ideas Options for the future Country-specific knowledge Position of your country Traditional partners and opponents of your country that are represented in committee Countries with similar or opposite positions represented in committee Both are equally important (!)

5 PREPARATION: STRATEGY Deal makers/breakers: make a list (max. 3-5 point) of the most important points for your country Form blocks and work as a group on points where your position is similar Do not only focus on the permanent members, a resolution still needs 50%+1 votes to pass Choose a role and stick to it Mediator, group leader, difficult player challenger, … Every role is necessary for success and is equally important

7 VERBAL: DIPLOMATIC LANGUAGE Express concern/disappreciation “France is deeply concerned about …” “Brazil strongly condemns…” … Express appreciation “Pakistan welcomes the efforts made by/the progress on…/the speech made by…” Express your position “Zambia feels…” “South Africa is convinced…”

8 VERBAL: STRUCTURE WHY? You only have 45 seconds to make a speech Other delegates have to be able to understand your points

9 VERBAL: STRUCTURE HOW? With words Firstly, secondly, thirdly, … On the one side, on the other side Most importantly … In content Logic construction Less is more: do not try to express every point you want to make in one speech Build in strategic silences Do not speak to fast (or to slow), as others have to be able to follow (and you do not want them to fall asleep)

10 VERBAL: VOICE, VOLUME, INTONATION, SPEED Voice and volume Not too silent Not too loud (no screaming) Respect your natural voice Speed When you’re addressing the committee, a timer will be projected Do not speak too fast Tip: listen to yourself while you’re speaking

13 NON-VERBAL: BODY LANGUAGE When addressing the committee Stand up straight (feet right under your shoulders) Stand still Look around, make sure everyone feels addressed Eye contact when addressing a specific member of the committee / the Chair Use your hands to make a point

14 NON-VERBAL: BODY LANGUAGE When others are addressing the committee Listen Make an interested impression Make notes Give an openminded impression Stay true to your strategy, in particular to the role you have chosen

15 NON-VERBAL: WRITING SKILLS Look at the example of a working paper and draft resolution Use diplomatic language Use the correct format
