Bell Ringer: What was the dominant economic aspect of the Southern Colonies and why did slavery play such a big role?

Why did Europeans target Africans for Slavery? 1. The Africans were Non Christian 2. They can’t run away (no where to go) 3. Easy targets – not organized to resist (thousands of small tribes) 4. Africans were more experienced in raising livestock and growing crops like rice than Europeans were

Why did slavery grow in the Southern Colonies but die out in the Middle and New England Colonies? 1.Long growing season made agriculture the main aspect of economy (NE & Middle = longer winters – what would they do with the slaves in winter?) 2.Larger Farms (plantations) – need a lot of labor to tend to (cash) crops 3.Demand for cheap labor since they needed so many workers

Transition from Indentured Servants to Slavery 1640 Virginia = 150 blacks living in colony 1680 = 3,000 in Virginia 1704 = 10,000 in Virginia 1700 – 1775 = about 350,000 present in all colonies

When the slave ship docked, the slaves would be taken off the ship and placed in a pen like this one. There they would be washed and their skin covered with grease, or sometimes tar, to make them look more healthy. This was done so that they would fetch as much money as possible. They would also be branded with a hot iron to identify them as slaves.

The Middle Passage 10 – 16 Million Africans sent to the Americas (North, South, & Caribbean) between 1500 – 1900 At least 2 Million died during the Middle Passage.
