1. First Login to Turnitin At www.turnitin.com/en_int select in the top right corner (If ‘Choose Your Site‘ comes up select ‘English International‘ - ‘English UK‘ does not work for Iceland)www.turnitin.com/en_int Enter ‘name‘@hi.is in ‘Email‘ (e.g. ‘sigjons@hi.is‘)‘name‘@hi.is Enter password in email from ‘Turnitin No Reply‘ for ‘Password‘. Select ‘Sign In’ and follow instructions. 4

2. Adding a Class 1.Create a class by selecting 2.Select a name, enrollment password, subject area and student level for class. Teacher can always look up the password and class ID. 3. Create an Assignment 1.Select class name on teacher home page in Turnitin 2.Select to create an assignment 3.Select a name and check assignment dates 4.Check assignment settings by selecting 6

4a. Assignment settings 1.Select 2.Choose among other things –If students can submit after due date –If an ‘Originality Report‘ is created –Include or exclude quotes, bibliography, small matches (number of words or percentages) –The above options can be edited later 7

4b. Assignment settings - cont. Repository options –Choose ‘Standard Repository‘ to check your student papers against other student submissions in current and previous classes. –Choose ‘No Repository‘ to not store student papers in the Turnitin student paper repository. Can apply e.g. when students continuously submit unfinished papers.

4c. Assignment settings - cont. Should submissions be compared to student papers, internet archives and/or scientific periodicals, journals and publications. Choose to save assignment settings. 9

5. Submitting a Paper 1.There is a list of classes on the teacher‘s homepage in Turnitin. Click on a class name to open a list of assignments for the class. 2.By clicking on ‘More actions‘ and selecting ‘submit‘ a teacher can submit a paper on behalf of a student. 10

6. Quick Submit instead of / 1.Select ‘yes‘ under User Info in Turnitin to Activate Quick Submit. 2.A Quick Submit button is now activated for submitting papers without creating classes and assignments. Papers submitted by Quick Submit are always added to the ‘standard paper repository‘. 11

7. View an Originality Report On the class homepage there is a list of submissions Clicking on the similarity index opens a new window Choose ‘Originality‘ in the new window to view the originality report 12

Student Access to Turnitin A teacher adds students to a class if students are to submit their own papers. 1.First choose ‘Students‘ on the class homepage. 2.Either add a student at a time with ‘Add Student‘ or a list of students with ‘Upload Student List‘ 3.On the class homepage in Ugla select ‘All operations‘| ‘Turnitin student list‘ to download a Turnitin-ready student list in Excel-formatUgla 4.Students are notified with email from ‘Turnitin No Reply‘ 13

8b. Student Access cont. When a student account is created Turnitin sends an email with a temporary password. The email looks like this: ‘To start using Turnitin, go to http://www.turnitin.com/en_us/home and log in using the following temporary information: http://www.turnitin.com/en_us/home Email address: ‘stu123’@hi.is‘stu123’@hi.is Password: nvd37z6h’ 14

8c. Student Access cont. Student logs into Turnitin for the first time 1.Go to http://www.turnitin.com and selecthttp://www.turnitin.com 2.Enter ‘stu123’@hi.is in ’Email’, temporary password in ’Password’ and click ’Sign In’‘stu123’@hi.is 3.Follow instructions and create a new password. 15
