1 Barriers to Sport Participation WHAT IS BEING DONE TO OVERCOME THEM?

2 WOMEN IN SPORT Women only fitness sessions in Leisure Centres. Physical Education in Schools: – 5X60 (only girls aloud) – Activities more ‘suited’ to girls on the curriculum e.g. zumba / spinning – School Sport Surveys to find out what girls want from physical education.

3 WOMEN IN SPORT UK Sport: Initiatives UK Sport: Strategy Framework for Women and Sport UK Sport formed the UK Co-ordinating Group on Women and Sport in 2001. This group was tasked with developing a strategy framework for Women and Sport with three main objectives: Participation: Increase participation by women and girls in a wide variety of sports, physical recreation activities and in physical education: Target - 5% Performance and Excellence: Enable women and girls with sporting ability to achieve excellence in the sport of their choice: Target - an additional 10 women per year performing in the World top 20 Leadership: Increase the number of women leaders at all levels and in all capacities in sport and physical recreation: Target - at least 30% representation by women on strategic sports boards and committees

4 WOMEN IN SPORT Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation (We exist to help Britain's women be more active) Role Models (Olympic 2012 – Jessica Ennis / Nicola Adams etc.) Increasing coverage on TV (BBC Red Button – 6 Nation Games / F.A Cup) Sky Sports – Netball.

5 BLACK & ETHNIC MINORITIES www.spotingequals.co.uk “we want to get more people from under-represented communities involved in sport and physical activities”www.spotingequals.co.uk www.kickitout.org “Kick It Out is football's equality and inclusion campaign”www.kickitout.org

6 BLACK & ETHNIC MINORITIES People from Ethnic Minorities allowed to compete with adapted clothing. Increased number of role models (Mo Farrah / Nicola Adams) Racism being dealt with in Sport – famous footballers being fined for inappropriate behaviour (Louis Suarez, John Terry)

7 OLDER PEOPLE More opportunities in Leisure Centres – e.g P.A.L.S in Llanrwst Leisure Centre (use of facilities only for older people). GP referrals – free gym membership for older people suffering for debilitating diseases (arthritis etc.) Veteran teams Increased number of bowling greens etc. Free fitness classes / activities for the elderly.

8 PEOPLE FROM SOCIAL DISSADVANTAGE Role Models in sport – Lionel Messi was born in Rosario, Santa Fe to a factory steel worker father Jorge Horacio Messi and a part-time cleaner mother Celia Maria Messi. Talent identification in schools – UK Sport / Sport Wales identifying talent in schools – adverts in papers looking for physique (e.g. Anna Watkins Gold Medalist Rower, London 2012 - World Class Start talent Identification Programme) Scholarships for pupils with talent to join academies / boarding schools (RGC)

9 PEOPLE FROM SOCIAL DISSADVANTAGE 5X60 – free sports provision for school children. Leisure Centres – activity weeks for school children during half term for reasonable prices. Free swimming for children -16 (WAG)

10 PEOPLE FROM LGBT COMMUNITY As part of the drive to tackle homophobia in sport, Sport England, Sport Northern Ireland, Sport Scotland, Sport Wales and UK Sport last week jointly signed up to the Government Equalities Office (GEO) Charter on Homophobia and Transphobia in Sport. The aim of the charter is to make sport a welcoming environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Role Models e.g Gareth Thomas “coming out” following a great rugby career!
