Clouds Students will be able to identify basic cloud types in photographs and in the field Students will be able to describe an illustrate basic weather profiles, their interaction, cause and effect
2
Weather Journal: You will be expected to write down the weather every day for the next 2 weeks. At the end of the two weeks, you will be expected to create a graph to illustrate what has been happening with the weather. You will need to create a graph that has the date and time along the bottom then a line graph for each of the following: humidity, wind, pressure, sky, precipitation. (You may colour the lines different colours or create a new graph for each set of information –your choice.) The graph must be neat –you must use a ruler! The graph must include all information, including the original weather journal sheet. It will be due: Tuesday, November 22, 2011 (Everyone will be expected to copy down the info gathered in class. You choose which final project you want to make)
3
Cloud Project: Observe the types of clouds each day for two weeks. Each day, photograph or draw the types of clouds you see in the sky. If you choose to photograph the clouds, print out your photos, then write the dates to show when each picture was taken. Also write the types of clouds shown in each picture. Attach your pictures to a sheet of poster board. If you choose to draw the clouds, be sure your pictures are clear and detailed. You should accurately show the colour and shape of the clouds. Also include part of the landscape such as trees, hills, or buildings that you see. Label each type of cloud shown in your pictures. Also write the date on each picture you draw. Attach your illustrations to a sheet of poster board. Due: Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Meteorology versus Climatology Meteorologist 1 Meteorologist: a person who uses specialized tools to measure current weather conditions and create short-term weather forecasts 2 study of weather 3 make forecast Climatologist 1 Climatologist is someone who studies climate 2 the study of climate 3 weather/ seasons/ temperature/ hot & cold climate 4 5
5
Temperature versus Heat Temperature A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a sample of matter Heat A measure of the total internal energy of a substance
6
Using your textbook, define the following: (When finished do your worksheets on clouds) Temperature:Heat: dew point: atmospheric pressure temperature inversion wind relative humidity cloud Bonus Point: what are the conditions for cloud formation?

Types of Clouds

Choose the best vocabulary word for each sentence and write it in the blank: dew point gas evaporation precipitation Fog relative humidity 1._____________refers to the percentage of water vapour in the air at a specific temperature compared to the amount it could hold 2.Water vapour is a _____________. You can’t swim in water that is in this form 3.Water vapour, which helps create clouds, gets into the air by means of _______ 4.The bottom of clouds show us where the __________has been reached 5.When clouds rest on the ground, they are known as ___________ 6.Rain, snow, sleet, and hail are all types of ___________, which comes from some-but not all –kinds of clouds
10
Your Turn: Using the provided cotton balls and construction paper, you must create the 10 types of clouds in their respective areas of the atmosphere Ex: Cirrocumulus is found 7000m up, in the high clouds region Low Clouds: 0-6500ft Middle Clouds:6500-20000ft High Clouds: 20000ft and above
