Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975. During that time there was Department of Primary Industry. The Division of Fisheries stocked a collection of Fisheries Research documents that were duplicated and distributed upon requests. It was not recognized as a library

1978 No Library 1979Collection of Research Documents – No Library The Library 1980Resurrection of Library 1981Employed Library Assistant to manage the library 1982Library in operation – No budget 1983I was posted to take charge of the Division Fisheries Library. 1984A library with no budget. Received free publications from other agencies and from PNG Dept. of Primary Industry.

The library was to serve the interest of Fisheries Biologist, Biology students and Technical staff within Division of Fisheries To – 1. Collect Research & Technical Reports. 2. Store & Maintain the material for future references. 3. Disseminate these references to its client.

DPI Central library forwarded fisheries related information to Division of Fisheries Library Library Primarily Served as a -collection and storage point for PNG Fisheries Research reports – report binding and mending source. – duplication and dissemination source

1991- 1999 Organization Transition From Division of Fisheries to be a Department of Fisheries & Marine Resources. The Library collection has expanded in size. Estimated collection to be 10,000 Research & Technical Reports by Fisheries Research Biologist, Economist, Observers, Consultants etc. Additional books, periodicals were freely received from FAO, SPC, FFA and other fisheries agencies

2000 Transition Dept. of Fisheries & Marine Resources officially became PNG National Fisheries Authority (Library) C/- P O Box 2016, 11th Floor, Deloitte Tower, Douglas Street, Port Moresby. Library Budget 2006 Library now has an annual budget of about K86,000 (USD 28, 000) Proposed for library collection development ● Purchase of latest books ● Subscribe to periodicals Current Problems ● Not subscribing to many fisheries publications ● Books stocks are very out-dated ● Publisher contacts and accounts not established ● One man librarian ● No other library skilled support staff
