American Sign Language: A Beginner’s Tutorial Welcome! This tutorial is a fast and easy way to learn some basic American Sign Language (ASL) communication skills. ASL: A Beginner’s Tutorial > Lessons > Sentences Now that you have mastered some vocabulary words, it’s time to put them into sentences. ASL is different from most spoken languages because there is no verb “to be”; instead, it is simply implied. Therefore, in order to say, “I am sad,” you only have to sign “I” and “sad.” Therefore, for this lesson, we will learn the basic pronouns. Should you mention this person later in conversation, continue to point in that same direction.
