Using all the evidence… Scientists organize living things by their evolutionary relationships Animals are grouped by different levels from the largest to the smallest: Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species The members of each group share a common ancestor Example: Wolf Kingdom - Animalia Phylum - Chordata Class – Mammalia Order - Carnivora Family - Canidae Genus - Canis Species – C. lupus As you move down this list: The groups get smaller The organisms in each group are more similar to each other
