South Africa gained its independence in the 1900’s, but was still dominated by Europeans – European settlers had moved to South Africa throughout the period of colonization Europeans owned most of the land and industries About 25% of the population of South Africa was white while 75% were black – After independence, the white-dominated government of South Africa instituted apartheid: a complete separation of races No social contact, separate facilities Economic and political power was reserved for the white population – Groups in and outside of the country fought apartheid Nelson Mandela became one of the main leaders of the anti- apartheid movement in South Africa In the 1980’s countries, including the US, put trade sanctions on South Africa Apartheid ended in the 1990’s
