Kingdom Animalia Phylum Annelida
(segmented worms)
2
Main Characteristics segmented worms true coelom (body cavity)
3
Annelids Include: earthworms marine worms leeches
This is a scale worm (Polychaetes). They live 1000 meters below the water’s surface and can turn their mouths inside out.
4
Other Traits - Annelida means “little rings”
- body segments separated by septum = internal wall
5
-some have bristles called setae
-have closed circulatory system -have well-developed nervous system (brain)
6
- sexual reproduction in annelids
- some are hermaphrodites
8
Streamlined bodies for moving through soil
Class Oligochaeta – Earthworm Streamlined bodies for moving through soil Few setae, allows for gripping soil Live in soil or fresh water
10
As earthworms pass food & soil through intestines, nutrients are absorbed and indigestible matter passes out through anus as castings Castings - enrich soil, earthworms aerate soil (worm poop)
13
Class Hirudinea - suck blood & body fluids from host tropical habitats
-Leeches -external parasites with suckers on each end - suck blood & body fluids from host -most live in moist tropical habitats -medicinal uses (circulation, anti-clotting)
15
Leeches being bred for medical uses.
16
What would you do to cure a swollen foot?
18
Class Polychaeta -includes: sandworms, bloodworms, fireworms
Marine worms -includes: sandworms, bloodworms, fireworms -have paired paddle-like appendages with setae
19
Nereis
20
Featherduster
21
