We then summarized the literary story of “that hero” in 3-4 sentences. Finally, we developed a thesis statement with a clear claim and 3 reasons. Today, we think about the REASONS that support the claim for the hero. We begin by GATHERING TBE/TBD at least 4 heroic moments per REASON. It’s important that each TBE/TBD is logically introduced with an appropriate transition for citing evidence.

DIRECT QUOTES  “Aha, you doggone Amoses, that hurt, but now I get my revenge!” (30)  he “picked up his suitcase and walked to the street…exclaiming, ‘Man! I was on the lam, I was just like Public Enemy Number One.’” (35)

DIRECT QUOTES…when using direct quotes it’s important that you don’t just list the quote but use explanatory language AROUND it to blend its purpose with both the information before and after it.  When Bud escapes the shed, he expresses his disappointment saying, “Aha, you doggone Amoses, that hurt, but now I get my revenge!” (30)  Bud doesn’t let this closed door keep him down, instead he “picked up his suitcase and walked to the street…exclaiming, ‘Man! 7. PARAPHRASING…sometimes Readers GATHER the best information when JUST REFLECTING about scenes without looking back into the book. 10. GATHER multiple pieces of TBE & TBD for EACH Reason. Sloppy Copy Gathering: don’t look back into the text; rather DESCRIBE the scene with as much detail so that we can visualize the scene. Cite the chapter. Repeat this process 4-5 times for each REASON. Direct Gathering: look back into the text for a specific line, quote, or scene that captures the moment that supports the REASON. Cite the page# Repeat multiple times.
