U4-W2: The Ultimate Literary Hero Essay - Gathering TBE.
2
Think about the difference between paraphrasing and citing direct quotes. Which method is best? Make your case. Continue to think about how TBE supports claims throughout class, gathering new ideas & details. Prepare to discuss & defend ideas and questions in Closing Starbucks with TBE and logical reasoning. 2

LESSON VOCABULARY CONNECTION Body Section Focus Statement (claim + reasons) TBE/TBD Paraphrase Citing TBE Transitions Analyzing TBE Transitions Paragraph Connectors In our last session, we alluded our literary hero with that of who or what best characterizes a “hero”. We then summarized the literary story of “that hero” in 3-4 sentences. Finally, we developed a thesis statement with a clear claim and 3 reasons. Today, we think about the REASONS that support the claim for the hero. We begin by GATHERING TBE/TBD at least 4 heroic moments per REASON. It’s important that each TBE/TBD is logically introduced with an appropriate transition for citing evidence.

PARAPHRASE When the social worker gave the news to Bud that he would be placed into another home, which in the past have been brutal and torturous; instead of throwing a temper-tantrum, he grins and bears it. Bud’s disappointment in the Amos Family closed his door to future foster homes, but led him on his journey to finding family. DIRECT QUOTES “Aha, you doggone Amoses, that hurt, but now I get my revenge!” (30) he “picked up his suitcase and walked to the street…exclaiming, ‘Man! I was on the lam, I was just like Public Enemy Number One.’” (35)

DIRECT QUOTES…when using direct quotes it’s important that you don’t just list the quote but use explanatory language AROUND it to blend its purpose with both the information before and after it. When Bud escapes the shed, he expresses his disappointment saying, “Aha, you doggone Amoses, that hurt, but now I get my revenge!” (30) Bud doesn’t let this closed door keep him down, instead he “picked up his suitcase and walked to the street…exclaiming, ‘Man! I was on the lam, I was just like Public Enemy Number One.’” (35)

PARAPHRASING…sometimes Readers GATHER the best information when JUST REFLECTING about scenes without looking back into the book. It can allow for fluency and sophistication improvements because it forces thinking rather than copying. When the social worker gave the news to Bud that he would be placed into another home, which in the past have been brutal and torturous; instead of throwing a temper-tantrum, he grins and bears it. Bud’s disappointment in the Amos Family closed his door to future foster homes, but led him on his journey to finding family.

DIRECTIONS: label the top of your page (as done above). REFLECT on the scenes that capture this trait. Last, jot the scene, being as DESCRIPTIVE as possible. Keep jotting scenes; when you are done start a new SLOPPY COPY for another REASON. When the social worker gave the news to Bud that he would be placed into another home, which in the past have been brutal and torturous; instead of throwing a temper-tantrum, he grins and bears it. Bud’s disappointment in the Amos Family closed his door to future foster homes, but led him on his journey to finding family.

Quick Assessment…skill W6.1b Quick Assessment…skill W6.1b Evaluate the evidence to determine which best supports the claim. When people leave Bud, he proves that when one door closes, another one opens. A. “one hundred and twenty miles. It didn’t take too much time before I figured out the twenty-four hours worth of walking was a lot longer than I thought it would be. (p.97) B. “And I’ma tell you, I’ve seen some things out of place before and a young brown skinned boy walking along the road outside of Owosso, Michigan, at two thirty in the morning is def...” ( 97) C. “All of a sudden I knew that of all places in the world I’d been in this was the one. That of all people that I’d ever met these were the ones. This is where I was supposed to be.(172) D. “Herman E. Calloway didn’t have to worry. I was a liar, not a thief. The only thing I’d ever stole was food out of someone’s garbage can.” (181) 9

GATHER multiple pieces of TBE & TBD for EACH Reason. Sloppy Copy Gathering: don’t look back into the text; rather DESCRIBE the scene with as much detail so that we can visualize the scene. Cite the chapter. Repeat this process 4-5 times for each REASON. Direct Gathering: look back into the text for a specific line, quote, or scene that captures the moment that supports the REASON. Cite the page# Repeat multiple times.
