4. YOUR Responsibilities To follow instructions everyday, all day, without exception To read and double check all written instructions To ask questions when confused

5. General Safety Information All science classes have potential hazards The more advanced the class, the greater the possibility for safety issues

6. Concerns & Issues for OUR Class General hazard warning –When you see this symbol, triple check for safety issues

7. Goggle Use Wear goggles when using: –Chemicals –Sharp objects –Fire NON-NEGOTIABLE It’s a LAW!

8. Electric Shock Safety Practices –Never use electric equipment around water –Be sure cords are untangled and are not tripping hazards –Unplug equipment when not in use

9. Poison Poison Hazard –Wear goggles –Read label –Keep away from mouth

10. Animal Safety Biohazard –Treat live or preserved animals or animal parts with care –Demonstrate respect for the specimen –Wash thoroughly after use

11. Safety Contract Each student and a parent or guardian will sign a safety contract. Students without a signed contract on file will not be allowed to participate labs.

12. Highlights of the Safety Contract Fooling around, disruptive behavior, and horseplay will result in removal from the lab Always read all of the directions and do not change the instructions unless you are told to do so Do only experiments assigned by or approved by your instructor

13. Safety Contract Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment when conducting experiments Do not touch chemicals with your hands. NEVER taste a chemical or solution No food or drink is allowed in the laboratory. This includes candy and gum!

14. Safety Contract Do not inhale chemicals Hot glass and cool glass look the same, be careful when heating glassware! Know the location and use of all safety equipment Report any accident or damaged equipment, no matter how minor, to the instructor

15. Safety Contract Dispose of all materials as directed by your instructor Keep your work area organized! Clean up after yourself Be respectful of the equipment and your fellow students Wear appropriate clothing

16. Safety Contract Never handle broken glass or use damaged glassware Don’t leave your experiments unattended Never reach over an exposed flame Use safety glasses as instructed – this is a state statute and will be enforced! Do not remove equipment or materials from the lab

17. Safety Contract Know who to contact for help in case of an emergency. –Mrs. Cronin –Ms. Monique –Mr. Deeble, Ms. Osten, Mrs. Dearborn –The main office (extension 300) –911 (It had better be SERIOUS!)

18. Breaking the Contract On a case-by-case basis, breaking the contract may result in: –Removal from the lab activity with alternate assignments given –School disciplinary procedures
