NORTHWEST ENERGY EFFICIENCY ALLIANCE RBSA Metering Study May 4, 2011
2
Context/History for RBSA Metering Study One of several RBSA “Optional Studies” Basic framework for sub-metering included in original RFP Several formal & informal discussions July 2010: RBSA Core Group meeting update September 2010: meeting at Council Dec 2010: post Efficiency Connections NW update Feb 2011: Northwest Research Group update For expediency, project evolved from main RBSA project flow, but coordination remains 2

3 Metering Study Goals Support 7 th PP development Updated characterization of home energy by end-use Updated end-use load shapes Foundation for further field testing (“Regional Testbed”)
4
Overall Study Architecture RBSA Sample (~1400) Heat Loss Assessment (~500) Fully Metered (~105) 4 Possibility to grow metered sample to full 1400 with non- intrusive load monitoring (NILMs) devices
5
Study Components 5 RBSA/Blower Door Physical characteristics + blower door sample Triple Metering Whole house, heating/cooling, hot water, (gas) Plug Loads TVs, home entertainment, home office Major Appliances Refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes washers/dryers, etc. Lighting Overall home energy use from lighting

7 Regional Testbed Testbed to serve as proving grounds for new EE products, services, and practices. RBSA Metering Study is the foundation for the Regional Testbed PNNL/DOE providing over $380k in 2011 for Metering Study Nearly $600k for Testbed startup First testing project: NILMs
8
Non-intrusive Load Monitoring (NILMs) Advanced, non-intrusive metering technology which disaggregates signal to identify individual loads Several devices at or near release Do they work? Can possibly use to expand size of metered test bed very cost effectively 8 Intel prototype
