Some General Information: “Romanticism doesn't mean lying dreamy-eyed on a patch of clover or gazing wistfully into your lover's eyes. It doesn't refer to romance at all. It means being a staunch individualist, believing in the rights of other individuals, and expressing deep, intense, and often uplifting emotions — like Beethoven (whose Fifth Symphony marked the beginning of the Romantic era in music). Often, but not always, it means having a deep, spiritual relationship with nature. "Nature never did betray the heart that loved her," wrote the British Romantic poet William Wordsworth in Tintern Abbey.” “ In Romanticism, the painter casts his subjective eye on the objective world, and shows us a picture filtered through his sensibility.”

Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) (German – First to Romanticism) Wanderer Above Sea and Fog 1818 What characteristic of Romanticism do you notice? In Romanticism, landscapes were seen as a symbol of freedom and boundlessness.

The Abbey in the Oakwood 1809-10 Romanticism also had ‘vanitas’. Vanitas were subjects of paintings during the Baroque period that symbolized life’s fleeting nature. Dead trees and overgrown ruins were used as symbols for the transience and finite nature of life.

Man and Woman Contemplating the Moon 1824 How does this painting reflect the tenets of Romanticism? In Romanticism, the figures are usually secondary to the environment they are in.

Francisco Goya (1746-1828) (Spain) The Third of May, 1808 1814 “The painting's content, presentation, and emotional force secure its status as a groundbreaking, archetypal image of the horrors of war.”

Y no hay remedio (And it can't be helped) from "The Disasters of War" (Los desastres de la guerra), c. 1810–1812The Disasters of War “This is a very similar composition—though Goya was freer in expression in the prints than the paintings, in which he conformed more to traditional conventions.”
