2 AVON ATHLETIC AFC This is the third occasion that Avon have appeared in the Final Match, their first time being 2008 where they were beaten by St Michaels with a 5-0 score line (which did not reflect on the match itself). In the following year the faced an in form Moorfield who had semi professional player Kevin Towey in their ranks who dominated the match while grabbing a hat trick in the process, the committee then banned any contract players taking part in the comp. Avon have got to this point with some very fine performances with two wins (one over the same opposition in their previous final the other against Village in their opening match – in their second group match they drew with today's opposition 2-2 in an exciting game They the reached the Final with a very close 2-1 win over Halebank Avon's team has a blend of young and older players, Gary Prescott, Mike and Sean Farrell Steve O’Grady while being led by management team of youth and experience Paul McGuinness and Gary Prescott Today will be the most open game with either side able to turn out a win, given the fact that 8 former Avon players now ply their trade for Widnes Parklands, their will be lots to prove from both sides. 3 HALTON BOROUGH AFC CRONTON VILLA AFC WIDNES PARKLANDS FC This is the first appearance of Widnes Parklands in any Widnes Cup Final, in fact in their short spell in the competition, they have never progressed past the group stages. Their performances in the group stages was a bit jittery at times drawing 1-1 with Moorfield in their opening match they then went on to record a second draw with today's finalists Avon Athletic After grabbing 2 goals in the first half they then had to defend a very attacking Avon in the second half. Avon did manage to gat a draw, but is was Avon's keeper Kieron Flynn who saved the day with a spectacular save in the dying seconds. Parklands then went on to record a 6-0 win against Village to ease their way into the semi finals. The semi final was a surprise to Cronton Villa who were hit right from the off with Parklands scoring 2 goals in the first half Two to watch out for in the Parklands' ranks are forwards Jay yates and Arron Timmis who have both scored a number of goals in the competition CRONTON VILLA V HALEBANK The 3 rd place play off will be contested by the same teams as last year – Cronton Villa V Halebank On that occasion Cronton were victors and took the shield This years 3 rd place play off has been moved to the preceeding Wednesday to try and take out some of the rushing on a Saturday morning of the final WIDNES PARKLANDS SQUAD Aaron Timmis Alex John Worsley Anthony Randall Ben Cheetham Craig Nevitt Craig Ruane Damon Yates Danny King David Nevitt Elliot Furlong Jack Fenlon Jamie Noone Jamie Russell Jason Yates John Bate Kyd Kirby Luke Colford Mark Bond Matthew Gilhooley Robbie Cosgrove Robert Baker Ryan Michael Robinson Scott Sant Sean Campbell Sean Moran Sean Welch Ste Cosgrove Stuart Brady Warren Hamlett AVON ATHLETIC SQUAD Adam Simm Ben Dermot Brian Clare Chris Morris David Marshall Dean Tyrell Gary Prescott Jeff Gleave Jimmy Kelly Joey Humphries Jon Kirk Josh Simm Karl Kneale Kieron Flynn Lee Brill Leonard Ireland Liam Downward Liam Durr Mark Moran Mark Stewart Matthew Connor Michael Farrell Mike Corrigan Nick O'grady Paul Mcguinness Rob Smith Robbie Ellis Sam Littler Sean Farrell Ste O'grady Steve Savage Tom Whitfield TERRY WALSH It cannot go without saying that Terry Walsh will be sadly missed in the Widnes Football Scene and in particular from the Widnes Football Development Forum. Terry passed away this year and will be sadly missed He was one of the founder members of the Forum and one of the driving forces behind the re-introduction of the Derek Roylance Widnes Challenge Cup. Derek Roylance was a friend and colleague of Terry in his playing days at Avon so it was only fitting the cup should be named after Derek. It was Terry that had written into the rules of the comp that the cup final should be played at the Widnes Rec (ICI) but unfortunately with the demise of the club and the availability of the pitches it was impossible to do so. Terry was the President of Avon Athletic football club as well as filling a lot more roles before being elected in his highest role. A strong supporter of all the clubs in Widnes, Terry will be sadly missed
