The Mood of Verbs Verbs are also identified by their mood (sometimes called “mode”), which is the attitude of the speaker towards what is expressed, though it does not change the form of the verb. Got that?? Let me explain!

Types of moods for verbs 1.Indicative – just the facts 2.Interrogative - ????? 3.Imperative – command or request! 4.Subjunctive – express a wish 5.Conditional – “if” statements

Indicative When used in a statement of fact or opinion, verbs are in the indicative mood.

Add indicative verbs to these sentences: Thomas’s locker started to ______________, so he ________________ it. I _______________ that everyone has the right to _______________.

Interrogative One subset of the indicative mood is the interrogative mood, seen in verbs within questions. the primary verb adds an auxiliary verb (or helping verb) which is a form of “do”: Do you have …, Did she sing …, and Does her grandpa collect … Second, this auxiliary verb comes before the subject of each sentence, separating itself from the primary verb.

Convert these statements into questions, and circle the complete verbs: 4. You have lacrosse practice this afternoon. 5. She sang the National Anthem. 6. Her grandpa collects his empty shampoo bottles.

Imperative !!! Verbs may also appear in the imperative mood, as seen in commands or requests. The verb will be the first word of a imperative clause, unless preceded by “please” and/or a name.

Use imperative verbs in commands of these lengths: 1 word ___________ 2 words ______________________ 4 words _______________________________ 6 words _______________________________

Quick Review In each sentence, circle the complete verb and label its mood. 1.Do you have any notebook paper left? Mood: _______________ 2. We left the movie after ten minutes. Mood: _______________ 3. Turn left at the next corner, please. Mood: _______________

Subjunctive We don’t use the subjunctive mood every day, but it has very specific contexts. It’s seen most often in forms of “to be.” It is used to express a wish. In this form of the subjunctive mood, where we would expect the verb “was” we instead use “were” to indicate that the statement is an unfulfilled wish. My favorite dance was the waltz, I wish I were dancing right now. Notice that the first half of each sentence is a fact or opinion and is therefore in the indicative mood, but the second half is in subjunctive mood.

Remember: Subjunctive verbs are Wishes! 1.My favorite grade was _____ ; I wish I _________ there again. 2. I like vacationing in/at ______ ; I wish I _________ there now. 3. One day I want to meet ____ ; I wish he/she __________ here.

Conditional This use of the subjunctive is the conditional sense as it describes a condition that is currently not real, but would need to become real in order for the independent clause to come true. If he were any taller, he’d be a giant. Similar to wishes, “if” statements express a fact that is not true, so we use the subjunctive mood to change “was” to “were.”

If I __________ President, I would __________. If today __________ Saturday, I could be _____. If ________ ______ real, I’d want to have one. If I were Scooby, I would eat a Scooby snack.
