What are pentaquarks? “Exotic” pentaquarks (qqqqQ) The antiquark has a different flavor from the other 4 quarks Quantum numbers different from any 3-quark baryon Unique identification using conservation laws Baryons whose minimum quark content is 5 Existence not forbidden by QCD “Non-exotic” pentaquarks (qqqqq) The antiquark has the same flavor as one of the other quarks Difficult to distinguish from 3-quark baryons s + 1/3 d − 1/3 u +2/3 d − 1/3 u +2/3

The pentaquark anti-decuplet ddssu uudds uussd narrow width (few MeV) decay modes nK +,pK 0 S = +1 S = 0 S = -1 S = -2 Chiral-soliton model D. Diakonov, V. Petrov, arXiv:hep-ph/0310212 5-quark states predicted also by other models: Skirme model, MIT bag model, Lattice QCD, QCM…

First observation: LEPS/SPring-8 C→K + K - (n) T. Nakano et al., PRL91, 012002 (2003) M = (1.54 ± 0.01) GeV/c 2 Statistical significance: 4.6 σ n ++ K+K+ n n identified by K + K - missing mass Θ + identified by K - missing mass cut on φ→K + K - (background reaction) Fermi motion corrections E max = 2.4 GeV

CLAS-d: first exclusive measurement d → K - pK + (n) S. Stepanyan et al., PRL91, 252001 (2003) M = (1.542 ± 0.005) GeV/c 2 Statistical significance: (5.2 ± 0.6) σ No Fermi motion corrections Final state identified with less background Removal cuts: φ: M(K + K - )<1070 GeV/c 2 Λ * : 1.485<M(pK - )<1.551 GeV/c 2 p n <80 MeV/c (no n spectator) p K+ < 1 GeV/c (bgk on M(nK + )) E = 1 – 3 GeV

First Observation on the Proton: CLAS-p p→K - + K + (n) V. Kubarovski et al., PRL92, 032001 (2004) M = (1.555 ± 0.010) GeV/c 2 Statistical significance: (7.8 ± 1.0) σ t-channel process a) selected and background processes eliminated with the cuts (c.m.): cosθ * K+ 0.8 Eg = 3 – 5.47 GeV

Summary on Θ + Spring-8 DIANA CLAS-dCLAS-p SAPHIR ITEP HERMES COSY ZEUS IHEP ~ 10 MeV gap between measured masses statistical significance between 4 and 7.8 σ several non-observations recently reported (unpublished): LEP(DELPHI): e + e - →nK +,pK 0 HERA B: p+A→pK 0 CDF: pp→pK 0 HyperCP: pK 0 E690: pp→pK 0 K - + p (exclusive) HERA-B: p+A→pK 0 ALEPH: pK 0 Phoenix: d+Au→nK +,pK 0 BaBar: e + e - →nK +,pK 0 NA49: Pb+Pb→pK 0 All high-energy and inclusive but clearly see known resonances! NEEDED HIGH-STATISTICS EXCLUSIVE MEASUREMENTS!!!!!

Decuplet partners of Θ + : search for 5 −−, o p+A 920GeV/c HERA-B hep-ex/0403020 Combined spectra C. Alt, et al., Phys.Rev.Lett.92, 042003 (2004) E cm = 17.2 GeV M=1.862± 0.002 GeV NA49 pp No peak observed!

Pentaquark today: open issues confirmation of existence of Θ + with high statistics precise determination of the mass of Θ+ properties of Θ + : spin, isospin, parity production mechanisms possible excited states of Θ + coupling N* to Θ + confirmation existence of other exotic members of decuplet The experimental program currently underway at CLAS intends to address these issues

CLAS G10: search for Θ + on deuterium Reactions to study: d→pK - K + n Θ + →nK + d→ΛK +(0) n(p) Θ + →nK +,pK 0 Λ→ p - K 0 → d→pK - Θ + →pK 0 K 0 → ”n’→K - K + n Θ + →nK + Fermi momentum corrections (to compare with SPring-8) n E γ = 0.8 – 3.59 GeV data taking finished end of May 10 billion of events collected data are being processed G10 “online” plots: case d→pK - K + (n)

Summary and outlook possible existence of pentaquarks gave new boost to hadron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations 10 Θ + signals published so far, but: 10 reports of non-observations need of high-statistics dedicated experiments to: experiments underway and planned at CLAS may solve this dilemma low statistics discrepancies in measured masses establish existence of Θ + study its properties find possible other pentaquarks STAY TUNED…
