1 HW: CHAPTER 7 SECTION 2 - VOCAB AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS DUE MONDAY 9/20.

2  What do we remember?  1776?  Articles of Confederation?  George Washington?  The Revolutionary War?

3  United States at the turn of the 19 th century  America has gained its independence ▪ BUT is still just a baby  Government is still growing ▪ And some people are not too happy about it  Country is still growing ▪ And everyone is trying to get their piece

7  Supported the Constitution  Favored a strong central government.  Federalists papers were a series of essays written in support of the Constitution.  The Constitution should provide a common defense, control trade and deal with foreign countries  Typically from the North.

8  Feared the Constitution  Wanted control to be in the hands of the states.  Believed that government should not crush American freedoms  Wanted a small government controlled by the states  Demanded the Bill of Rights that would ensure the liberties of its citizens  Typically from the South.

12  What is a Tariff?  When you hear the word Abominable what do you think of?  Why was it called the Tariff of Abominations and WHO called it that?

13  What was the purpose of the Tariff of Abominations?  Which part of the country would benefit from such a tax?  Here is the toughy…. WHY???? ( Hint Hint Industrial Revolution)

14  How is the North different than the South after the Industrial Revolution?  How would the Tariff of Abominations affect the South differently than the North?  Is this a big deal? (Think Fed. Vs Anti-Fed)

15 Start Congress passes tariffs on imported goods, which benefit northern manufacturers, but hurt southern planters South Carolina votes to nullify, or void, both the 1828 and 1832 tariffs within the state’s borders and threatens to secede from the Union if force is used against the state. Action The FORCE BILL give Jackson authority to use troops to enforce the federal law in South Carolina Compromise Congress reduces the tariffs on imports South Carolina suspends its nullification of the tariffs but Nullifies the force Bill
