4 Introduction It is increasingly to see Chinese-Western intercultural couples in China and other countries (Qin, 2014) Ministry of Education (2014) → More than 90,000 foreign students → Increased by 16 % → Intercultural relationships Statistics about spouses that the government gathered (2014) → Increased by 9.62% (compared to 2013) → Intercultural marriages 1 1 2 2

6 1 1 Knowledge → general and specific information Attitude → the degree of open mindedness and the motivation Skills → language communication ability and understanding

7 Literature Review intimacy passion decision/commitment 2 2 → feelings of closeness passion decision/commitment ↓ the drives that lead to romance and physical attraction short-term : the decision that one loves a certain other long-term : make commitment to maintain that love ↑

8 Methodology Research Questions 1. What kind of love do Taiwanese university students want in this generation? 2. How much willingness do Taiwanese university students have to engage in intercultural relationships? Quantitative analysis → Four parts including 18 questions 160 participants Characteristics of my participants → 30% male & 70% female → 60 % single 35.6% dating with Taiwanese 4.4% dating with foreigners

9 Results & Discussion Ying’s study (2002) Understand the culture of a foreign country well Open-minded to that foreign culture Want to engage with that foreign culture Familiar with that foreign language in learning experience Can communicate by that foreign language with other people Want to form friendship with more people in that foreign country → Agree to have intercultural relationships 83.3% want to form friendship with more people in that foreign country → At the same time, they disagree to have intercultural relationships They are different

10 Results & Discussion Attitude towards love Feelings of closeness with their partner Physical closeness with their partner Make commitment to maintain the love Single (60%) Hope to be serious in both kinds of relationships (66.9%) → Serious to the loving relationships Which mode is not easy to form a family ? 44.4%→No matter in local relationships or intercultural relationships 40.6% → Local relationships are easier to form a family ♂ (67.9%) > ♀ (60.4%) ♀ (54.2%) > ♂ (47.3%) Higher

11 Limitation Not even in gender The participants mostly major in languages For future studies → Balanced quantity in gender → Narrowed to a specific students with the same major → Different majors with parallel participants 1 1 2 2

12 Conclusion Attitude towards love Feelings of closeness → High Physical closeness → Moderate Willingness to make commitment to maintain the love → High In Sternberg’s study (1986) →Typical important charactertics in long-term relationships Intercultural relationships →Agree or Disagree Agree with cross-cultural relationship (96.9%) Want to have intercultural relationships (85%) Want to have a cross-cultural marriage (76.9%)
