2
Safety First The Do’s: 1.Wear safety googles. 2.Wear protective clothing (when directed. Not all labs require this). 3.Use proper techniques and procedures. 4.Discard wastes properly. 5.Know the location and proper use of safety equipment 6.Prepare for lab by reading the lab procedure sheet before each lab
3
Safety First The Do’s – Continue 7.Ask questions about anything that is unclear. 8.Work quietly and cooperatively. 9.Dress appropriately (no baggy clothes and hair needs to away from face and off shoulders; Closed toe shoes only). 10. Be alert, serious, and responsible. 11. Inform the teacher of any problem, no matter how small.

Equipment Goggles Protects eyes from chemical splashes Bunsen Burners Used to heat substances
5
Equipment Graduated cylinder Accurately measures liquid volumes Spot Plate Flat plate with multiple “wells” used as small test tubes
6
Equipment Stirring Rod Used for stirring Evaporating dish Liquids are heated over a flame so they evaporate, leaving a solid residue in the dish
7
Equipment Crucible Tongs To hold hot crucibles Forceps Used to pick up or hold small items
8
Equipment Watch glass Holds solids while being weighed or as a cover for a beaker Beaker Used to hold liquid
9
Equipment Thermometer Measures temperature Test Tube Clamp Clamp used to hold hot hot test-tube
10
Equipment Balance An instrument for determining weight Dropper pipet Draws in a liquid & expels it in drops
11
Equipment Volumetric Flask For making up solutions to a known volume Funnel For pouring liquid or other substance through a small opening
12
Equipment Mortar and pestle Used to grind up materials Volumetric Pipet Measures small amounts of liquids accurately
13
Equipment Striker Used to light Bunsen burners Rubber Stopper Used to cover ends of test tubes and flasks
14
Equipment Spatula Small scoop used to transfer powder and crystal chem- icals Wire Gauze Used to support a container (i.e. beaker or flask) during heating
15
Equipment Test Tube Rack Holds 5-6 Test Tubes in a row Wash bottle Used to rinse various pieces of laboratory glassware
16
Equipment Ring Stand Holds funnels & wire gauze above table Erlenmeyer Flask Used to hold liquids, has narrow neck to prevent splashes
17
Equipment Test tube Open tube used to hold liquids Weighing Paper Used for weighing & trans- ferring powders & crystals
