6 The original movie ratings (used from 1967 to 1970) were: G (Suggested for general audiences): All ages. M (Suggested for mature audiences): Parental discretion advised. R (Restricted): People under 16 not admitted unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Driver license is used for verification of age. X : People under 17 will not be admitted.

7 The ratings used from 1996 to present are: Rated G: GENERAL AUDIENCE— All ages admitted RatedPG: PARENTAL GUIDANCE SUGGESTED— Some material may not be suitable for children RatedPG-13:PARENTS STRONGLY CAUTIONED— Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. RatedR:RESTRICTED—Under17requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. Rated NC-17 : NO ONE 17 AND UNDER ADMITTED

8 Trailers The MPAA also rates movie trailers for theatrical exhibition. Title cards displayed before the start of a trailer indicate the trailer's rating: Green band : approved for all and appropriate audiences; can be shown before any rated movie. Yellow band : approved for appropriate audiences; can be shown before PG-13, R and NC-17films. Red band : approved for adult audiences; can be shown before R and NC-17 films. Blue band : unknown, it can only be seen on Dumbo DVD trailer.
