5 A Word about Words Scholarship: Academic achievement is the primary selection criteria. Other criteria may also be involved such as community involvement or extracurricular activities. Bursary: Financial need is the main criteria. However, your academics may also be considered. PSI: post-secondary institution. The college, tech school or university you will attend after high school. Student loans: provincial, federal or bank loans - money you must pay back – more about that later.

9 Who Offers Awards? High schools, post- secondary schools, provincial and federal governments; Community groups, service organizations, companies, and private individuals.

10 Types of Scholarships 1. PSI SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES Apply to the post-secondary school first Fill in the separate award application There are strict deadlines! Often requires a minimal academic standing in an “admission average”. Many awards will also ask for a history of extra- curricular and/or community activities you have participated in throughout high school.

11 What’s an admission average? The five courses you need to present in order to attend a university or transfer college. Different faculties require different courses. English 30-1 is always a requirement. Many faculties will include your band, choir, art and/or PE classes or Work Experience 35. These “option” courses are an excellent way to raise your admission average for both acceptance and scholarship $$$$.

12 Faculty examples – 5 courses. This example is for the U of C. Other universities have different criteria. Bachelor of Science 1. English 30-1 2. Math 30-1 3. Two of: Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30 or Math 31 4. One other 5 credit (or 2 three credit ) grade 12 subjects or 5 bundled credits in advanced CTS courses. excluding special projects. This is where Band, PE, Work Experience, Info Pro, Foods, 2 nd Lang., etc. fit in. Bachelor of Fine Arts 1. English 30-1 2. 2 subjects from Social 30, Math 30(-1 or 2), Math 31,2 nd Language or any of the Sciences. 3. 1 subjects from Band, Art, Choir, Drama or anything mentioned above. 4. 1 subject can be any other grade 12 course excluding special projects. www.starthere.ucalgary.ca

13 University of Calgary awards If you are currently a high school student applying for admission to the U of C for the Fall 2014, you will be considered automatically for admission scholarships. The admission scholarships program is currently under review and more details will be available later. Scholarships Requiring an Application - Dec. 15th. 14 Entrance Awards at University of Alberta Academic Excellence – Value up to $6000 – Automatic Consideration (no application required) Entrance Scholastic Distinction Scholarship Competition – Value up to $50,000 – Application opens: mid October Deadline: December 15, 2013 (approx. 60 scholarships) Entrance Leadership Scholarship Competition – Value: Up to $20,000 – Deadline to apply: December 15, 2013 Eldon Foote Track & Field Scholarship Competition - $2000/yr for a max. 5 yrs – Deadline to apply July 4, 2014 Students must apply: www.ualberta.ca/awards

15 Entrance Scholastic Distinction Scholarships – U of A Apply to an undergraduate degree program at the U of A Be entering an undergraduate degree program from high school at the University of Albert in Sept. 2014 Complete the online award application on Bear Tracks Be granted Early Admission

16 University of Lethbridge Entrance Awards Board of Governors’ Scholarship ($1000 for 80% +). $500 for average of 75 – 79.9% Deadline is December 15 th. Separate app not required. Board of Governors’ Relocation – 75% adm avg. beyond 100 km from Lethbridge. ($500 - $1000) Leadership Award – Scholarships available on the basis of your academic achievement as well as other criteria, such as leadership ability and volunteer experience. Separate application is required. High School Applicant – awards are based on your predicted admission average, as well as other criteria, such as financial need, volunteer experience and artistic ability. 17 Mount Royal College Entrance Awards You must apply to Mount Royal College first, preferably between December 1 st – January 31 st. Apply for awards before March 1 st. Highest average on two group 1 subjects. These subjects are core courses and/or band, choir, art, or phys ed. President’s Scholarship and Bursaries Final average of 80% in 5 appropriate grade 12 subjects. Includes full tuition and fees for one full academic year plus $1,000 cash. www.mtroyal.ca/awards

18 SAIT Entrance Awards Must apply to SAIT first: between now and February 1st Apply for entrance awards before March 15 th Some awards like the Cadmus- Calgary Foundation consider academic achievement, leadership/community involvement, and financial need. This one organization gives out 28 awards of $3500.00 each to entering SAIT students Most of the entrance awards at SAIT consider financial need in their criteria. Just one form is completed to be considered for all entrance and general awards at SAIT www.sait.ca

19 2 nd type of scholarship – general awards offered by government, industry & community Different awards require different criteria. Academic: overall average, admission average, or sometimes your final mark in a particular group of subjects. Leadership, community service, school participation in clubs, organizations, athletics. Sometimes just an essay References FILL IN THE APPLICATION!! 2 hours of work could be $500 or more. That’s $250/hour!

22 Alexander Rutherford Scholarship for high school achievement – Alberta Government award. Value: Up to $2,500 Selection: Achieving an 75 +% percent average on five designated subjects in Grades, 10, 11 and 12. A student need not have achieved this average in all three grades to qualify for a portion of the scholarship. Eligibility: Alberta residents who plan to enrol or are enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program of at least one semester Deadline: May for September start date. Applications: available April in the Career Centre & Guidance Office and online

23 Courses for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. Minimum overall average of 75% Grade 10 75%-79.9% $300 80%+ $400 1. English 10-1 or 10-2 2. Two from : pure or applied math; Science 10; Social 10-1 or -2; or 2 nd language course. 3. any 2 other courses at the grade 10 level. Grade 11 75%-79.9% $500 80% + $800 1. English 20-1 or 20-2 2. Two from: pure or applied math; science 20, chem 20, bio 20, physics 20, social 20 or a 2 nd language at the 20 level. 3. Any 2 other courses at the grade 11 level.

25 Rocky View Teachers Scholarship Graduates from our school or any other school in our division or your parent works for the ATA Local #35. Entering 1 st year of study at a post-secondary institution. Based upon final grade 12 grades which must include English 30-1 or 30-2. Does not include work experience or special projects. Average of marks must be at least 80%. Apply in June. Be certain to order an OFFICIAL transcript from Alberta Education to be sent directly to the scholarship committee. Applications are in the Career Centre and Guidance.

28 TD Scholarships for Community Leadership Contributions to community considered as well as personal circumstances and special challenges you may have faced along the way 80 finalists chosen from 5 regions in Canada Value: up to $70,000 which includes up to $10,000 for tuition per yr. and $7500 for living expenses Deadline: December 6, 2013 Must have a minimum average of 75% in your most recently completed school year.

31 Enmax Calgary Energy Scholarship Deadline: June 1 One scholarship valued at $1000 will be awarded to a Bert Church High School student. Must be in a discipline related to the electricity sector (such as, electrician, millwright, instrumentation, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or any other field that can be demonstrated to be relevant to the Alberta electricity sector.) Confirmation requested.

33 How to Apply Request forms early from the career centre or the website. Allow plenty of time before the deadline to gather all of the information, get references, prepare essays, etc. Photocopy all of your information. Keyboard your responses, if possible. Be accurate, honest and send in a neat application. You are representing yourself in the best light. Send applications by registered mail, if they are to be mailed.

38 Common Pitfalls to the PSI process Failure to order transcripts to be sent to a PSI or scholarship office Failure to specify that your transcript needs to include June final and diploma marks Conditional Acceptance: means that you are accepted to a PSI based on the information presented at that time.
