Collaboration to Refine and Enhance Science Teaching (CREST) Welcome Teachers! Thursday, February 18, 2016

Administrivia Substitute Teacher Forms –Bring with you to the next session OR –Scan and email with signatures Teacher Resource Requests –Use the Teacher Resource Request Form –$100/teacher (not school) –Bring to March session

Investigating Patterns Instructions What question is on the table? The full sheet of paper represents the environment & each hole punch represents an animal of the same species with different coloring Roles: –Populator: Prepares the environment –Predator: Attacks organisms in the environment –Timer/Counter: Times attack window & organizes counting Once you are finished organizing and representing your data, come see Jess or Matt for the final task card.

Analyzing & Interpreting Data Central Expectations Raw Data Analyzed Data for Pattern Making Interpreting Data to Communicate Ideas

Analyzing & Interpreting Data Central Expectations Raw Data Analyzed Data for Pattern Making Interpreting Data to Communicate Ideas UNHELPFUL

Analyzing & Interpreting Data Central Expectations Raw Data Analyzed Data for Pattern Making Interpreting Data to Communicate Ideas TABLES GRAPHS STATISTICAL ANALYSIS SPREADSHEETS

Analyzing & Interpreting Data Central Expectations Raw Data Analyzed Data for Pattern Making Interpreting Data to Communicate Ideas WRITTEN ARGUMENT STRUCTURED ARGUMENT

NGSS Expectations for MS In MS, students should have opportunities to learn techniques for displaying, analyzing, and interpreting data: –Develop different kinds of graphs –Identify outliers in a data set –Average values to reduce the effects of measurement error –Explain why these techniques are needed

A Structure for Interpreting Bar Graphs/Histograms & Scatter Plots 1. What does the title mean? (What can we expect to learn from the graph?) - Ex. How changes in shoe size are related to changes in height 2. What does the x-axis represent? 3. What does the y-axis represent? 4. What does a point represent? 5. What are the patterns in the graph and what do they tell us? (6. What is the meaning of the slope?)

Does this structure work?
