Movement and use of plant products. How do plants transport and use the products they make in photosynthesis? Starter: Take one of the test tubes on your desk, a straw and put goggles on. Blow GENTLY into the tube and explain what you observe. 1)What do you observe? 2)What have you tested for? 3)Where has this chemical come from?

Think, pair, share Group 1 : What reaction produces carbon dioxide and where do the reactants come from? Group 2: how can we link carbon dioxide to plants? Group 3: how else do plants use glucose? How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Success criteria I can name the ways plants store glucose. I can explain why plants store glucose in other forms. I can explain where the gases move into and out of cells from. How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Call my Bluff Stomata How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Call my Bluff Stomata – an opening on the underside of the leaf which allows carbon dioxide and oxygen to move in and out of the plant. Stomata – a variety of tomato which is yellow in colour. Stomata – a type of cell found in tropical plants that allows them to produce sweet fruit. How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

A quick Recap Clips http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/the-products-of-photosynthesis/10606.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1_uez5WX1o Success criteria: Write down 3 key points from the clip about how the products of PHS are used. How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Task 1 : Storing Glucose Look at these nuts and fruits. Think, pair, share. What do you notice about the nutrient content. Where has it come from? Why is it important? How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Write a science tweet about how plants store glucose Key words – 10 points for a team which uses all the words. 5 points for 3 words Glucose Fat Starch Nuts Fruit Sugar

Think, pair, share Why do we use these? How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Proteins – complete Proteins are important for plants to form ………, leaves and ………. Plants do not eat so have to…….their own nutrients. Plants get …………from the soil which are dissolved in ………………. They turn these into proteins in their cells. WORDS Chlorophyll, nitrates, water, make, roots How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Lets investigate – complete the following Investigation: starch in fruit and veg. Take samples of a range of fruit and veg. Test for starch. Make a conclusion (PEE) P: Which of the samples you tested, had the most/ least starch? E: How do you know? E: Use the information provided to write an explanation to support this. How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Experiment 2 – leaves from light / dark Conclusion: PEE Which of the samples had no starch? How do you know? Use the information provided to write an explanation to support this. How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

QUESTION REVEAL Will you get an easy or a hard one?5 points / question. : Which process makes glucose in a plant? Where do plants get water from? What is the equation for photosynthesis? If you join lots of glucose together, what do you get? What is the equation for respiration? What does the xylem vessel carry? What is 185 x 2 What is the green substance found in chloroplasts? What does the phloem vessel carry? 1 3 45 6 7 8 9 2 How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Check point, which way will the particles move? molecule How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

What is the inside of a leaf like? How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Use the information to label and annotate the diagram. Stomata are a hole through which gases can enter and leave the leaf. Oxygen and carbon dioxide can freely move by diffusion through these holes when they are open, however, their movement is halted when the stomata are closed. This occurs when a plant has too little water and the guard cells collapse in, pressing together and closing the hole. This prevents the plant from becoming dehydrated and losing further water through evaporation. There are two guard cells for each stomata. At the top and bottom of the leaf there is a waxy cuticle which prevents the leaf from becoming burned or dehydrating. Below the cuticle is the upper epidermis and below this the palisade layer, which contains long cells with a large amount of chloroplasts. Further down again, is the spongy mesophyll which contains large air gaps in order for the gases made and used, to move around the leaf. The palisade layer and spongy mesophyll are collectively called the “mesophyll tissue.” Finally there is the vascular structure of the leaf which contains the xylem and phloem vessels, which carry water and food respectively.

Getting Gases In – lets investigate Aim: to observe and draw stomata. Method: 1) Paint the underside of a leaf with clear nail varnish. 2) Leave to dry 3) Peel off nail varnish 4) Observe under microscope and draw what you see. How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Check Point – what is the job of the stomata? To allow gas exchange to occur. To let oxygen out To allow a plant to breathe. For a plant to get water. 123 4 How do plants move and use the products the make in photosynthesis?

Task Draw a diagram of a plant with roots, stem, leaves, etc Use your knowledge, the computer tokens and the information, to label and annotate the diagram.
