Teaching Point: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.” Do now Discussion: Where on Earth do you think rocks are preserved the best? Why do you think so?
2
Rocks can break apart (i.e. weathered) either: 1. physically, by changing its shape and size. 2. chemically, by changing it is made of (i.e. composition) Let’s Review Basic Weathering TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”
3
There are three factors that control how quickly or slowly a rock weathers: 1. the climate of the environment where the rock is 2. the rock’s composition (i.e. its minerals) 3. the surface area exposed to weathering 4. how exposed or hidden it is to weathering processes All these factors work together to destroy rocks. TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.” Factors Controlling Weathering

1. Climate TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.” Climate Affects Weathering Physical WeatheringChemical Weathering Moisture ContentHigh Rainfall TemperatureLow temperatureHigh temperature

2. Composition Weak minerals = faster weathering Stronger minerals = slower weathering Composition Affects Weathering TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”
7
Composition Affects Weathering TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”
8
3. Surface Area More crushed up/smaller pieces = more weathering Less crushed up/larger pieces = less weathering Surface Area Affects Weather TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”
9
4. Exposure Closer to Earth’s surface = faster weathering Deeper underground = slower weathering Exposure Affects Weathering TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”

Take out your own Plicker Card. You should all have a number assigned to you. When you see the answer you think is correct, turn your card so the multiple choice answer letter of your choice is facing up Wait until the entire class is done, and do not change your answer based on others! Mid-Lesson Assessments TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”
11
1.Which long-term atmospheric changes would increase the rate of chemical weathering of surface bedrock? a.Decreasing temperature and decreasing precipitation b.Decreasing temperature and increasing precipitation c.Increasing temperature and decreasing precipitation d.Increasing temperature and increasing precipitation Mid-Lesson Assessments TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”
12
1.The most likely reason powdered limestone reacts faster is that it has: a.less total volume b.more chemical bonds c.more total surface area d.lower density Mid-Lesson Assessments TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”

Intellectual Engagement When Egypt was being excavated from the sand, many artifacts were found, including a piece called ‘Cleopatra’s Needle’. It was decided that the artifact would be displayed in public in NYC so that millions of people could observe the beauty of its hieroglyphics. How do you think the limestone artifact was affected by this decision? -or- How does the material something is made of affect decisions in how it will be preserved? Provide examples. TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”

Task: Using the information we just learned about the factors affecting weathering… Student 1- create a graphic organizer of the four factors affecting weathering, and provide a short explanation of each next to your organizer. Student 2- create a simple graph showing the relationship between: 1) moisture and weathering, 2) hardness and weathering, and 3) surface area and weathering. Label your axis and add a title Student 3- create an illustration showing each of the factors affecting weathering. Flexible Group- obtain your portfolios and meet with me in the back of the room. Class Activity- Weathering Factors TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”

Lesson Summary In your tables of four, go back into your notes and consider what we have just learned today, and then… 1. Identify three (3) important concepts we learned today, and then… 2. Place those three in order from the most important to the least important concept. TP: “To analyze the factors affecting the rate of weathering.”
