1 Scientific notation with positive powers of 10
Math 8 Lesson 2.2 Scientific notation with positive powers of 10

2 Write it down, but you DON’T have to memorize it!
What is SCIENTIFICNOTATION? Scientific notation is a method of expressing very large and very small numbers as a product of a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10, and a power of 10 Write it down, but you DON’T have to memorize it!

3 How do you write a large number SCIENTIFIC NOTATION?
Locate the decimal (if it is invisible, write it in) Move the decimal to the LEFT so there is just ONE “non-zero” number to its LEFT Re-write the number with the new decimal position Finish writing by including "x 10 𝒏 " 𝒏 is the umber of spaces the decimal moved 𝒏

4 BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU COUNT!
Example The distance to the sun from the earth is 93,000,000 miles Write this number in scientific notation . 9.3 x 10 ? x 10 𝟕 Why 7? The decimal moved 7 spaces BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU COUNT!

5 Write this number in scientific notation x 10 ? x 10 𝟑 Why 3? The decimal moved 3 spaces

6 STANDARD NOTATION is how we normally write numbers
STANDARD NOTATION is how we normally write numbers What is STANDARD NOTATION?

7 How do you write a number STANDARD NOTATION
Use the exponent to see how many places you will move the decimal to the right Move the decimal to the RIGHT (Add more zeroes if needed). Do NOT write the "𝐱 𝟏𝟎 𝒏 " How do you write a number STANDARD NOTATION

8 You don’t need to write the decimal if it is all the way to the right
Example Write this number in standard notation 9.3 x 10 7 . Why 7 spaces? The exponent was 7 93,000,000 You don’t need to write the decimal if it is all the way to the right

9 Example Write this number in standard notation x 10 3 . Why 3 spaces? The exponent was 3 8,
