To make a fraction with a negative exponent: 1) Place a one over the number with the exponent. 2) Multiply the exponent out underneath. Scientific to Standard Notation and Back Again
3
Write in fraction form.
4
Write in scientific notation. 1) Only one digit can be in front of the decimal. 2) Write all remaining numbers until you reach all the zeros in a row. 3) Write a multiplication sign. 4) Place the 10 with the appropriate power.
5
A) 15,010 B) 0.0092 C) 960,000 D) 7,096,000,000 E) 0.00000000002
6
To change from Scientific to Standard Notation: Look at the exponent *The number tells you how many places to move the decimal. *The sign tells you which way to move the decimal Positive – move to the right Negative – move to the left
7
Write in standard notation. a) 3.79 x 10 3 b) 2.506 x 10 -5 c) 3 x 10 7 d) 4.2 x 10 -11 e) 5 x 10 -2

Hint: Think money to help with exponents with scientific notation!! If it is a lot of money you would be positive, therefore a positive exponent. If a tiny decimal number, you would be negative if that is how much money you had, so a negative exponent.
