Aim: How do we use scientific Notation? It's Not Science Fiction...It's Scientific Notation! Scientific Notation
2
1) The Formula N X 10 ℮ N= any number between 1 and 10 E= a positive or negative exponent. This tells us how many places to move the decimal.
3
2) Converting scientific notation into standrard notation 4.6 X 10 9 If the exponent is positive, move the decimal over that many places to the right 4,600,000,000.0
4
Practice continued 3.1 X 10 -3 If the exponent is negative, move the decimal over that many places to the left 0.0031 The negative symbol lets you know things are going to get small.
5
3) Converting standard notation into scientific notation If your number is greater than 1, your exponent will be positive Move the decimal to the left Ex. 543.0 = 5.43 X 10 2 If your number is less than 1, your exponent will be negative Move the decimal to the right Ex. 0.0054 = 5.4 X 10 -3
6
Convert the following… 2.25 X 10 -3.00225 7.5 X 10 5 750,000
7
Convert the following… 1,500,000 1.5X10 6.000525 5.25X10 -4
