Required Navigational Safety Equipment Exempt vessels (33 CFR 164.01 b) UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft)UTVs in limited geographical areas, assistance towing, pollution response, any other vessel exempted by the COTP.

U.S. Coast Guard New AIS requirements that are in effect as of March 2 2015 164.46 Automatic Identification System (b) AIS carriage. (1) AIS Class A device. The following vessels must have on board a properly installed, operational Coast Guard type-approved AIS Class A device:Coast Guard type-approved AIS Class A (i) A self-propelled vessel of 65 feet or more in length, engaged in commercial service. (ii) A towing vessel of 26 feet or more in length and more than 600 horsepower, engaged in commercial service. (iii) A vessel that is certificated to carry more than 150 passengers. (iv) A self-propelled vessel engaged in dredging operations in or near a commercial channel or shipping fairway in a manner likely to restrict or affect navigation of other vessels. (v) A self-propelled vessel engaged in the movement of – commercial servicetowing vesselcommercial servicecertificatedpassengers (A) Certain dangerous cargo as defined in subpart C of part 160 of this chapter, or (B) Flammable or combustible liquid cargo in bulk that is listed in 46 CFR 30.25–1, Table 30.25–1.Certain dangerous cargoFlammable or combustible liquid cargo in bulk

Communications 33 CFR 26.03(a)(3) UTVs > 26ft NOT subject to Great Lakes Radio Agreement 2 VHF FM radios (including portable radios, i.e. handhelds) Capable of transmitting / receiving on VHF FM Ch. 13 and, Be capable of maintaining a continuous listening watch on Ch 16.

Communications in “Special Waters” Select Waters on Mississippi, UTV’s must be capable of transmitting and receiving on Ch 67 instead of Ch 13. VTS areas, UTV’s must have on board a radio that; Is capable of transmitting and receiving on VTS frequency in 33 CFR 161.12(c) Note: a single VHF-FM radio capable of scanning or sequential monitoring (dual watch) will not meet the requirements for two radios.

Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) Digital Selective Calling (DSC) Since 1999, FCC required fixed mount radios to be equipped with the DSC feature. DSC allows ship to ship private calls DSC also has a distress channel monitored by commercial ships DSC has a single button emergency transmission DSC’s must be encoded with a unique nine digit FCC I.D. number

Navigation Rules 33 CFR 83.01 (a) These Rules apply to all vessels upon the inland waters of the United States and to vessels of the United States on the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes (g) The operator of each self- propelled vessel 12 meters or more in length shall carry, on board and maintain for ready reference, a copy of these Rules.
