The Common Good Ethical approach that ensures that our systems, institutions, and policies focus on the good of everyone Depends on the collective cooperation of a community to ensure that these systems are run to maximize benefit There are several problems with this approach Relies on the communal agreement on values and how they should be implemented Free riders do not do their share to support the common good and too many will cause the systems and policies to fail Individualism supports freedom and free will while the common good relies on the collective efforts of everyone

Reasons for Homelessness 1. Increasing cost of living Cost of an average home in the United States costs 6x the average salary when it was only 4x 30 years ago This gap is increasing and makes it more and more difficult for one to afford stable housing 2. Mental/physical illness Veterans make up 40% of homeless people in the United States Due to mental illnesses such as PTSD that may make it difficult for them to live a regular life Veterans with a physical disability are extremely limited because about 75% of veterans do not have a college degree necessary for many jobs and jobs that require physical labor are impossible

Reasons for Homelessness 3. Unfortunate events Single largest reason for homelessness on a global scale Natural disasters are becoming more devastating as the human population increases and condenses Since 2008, an average of 26.4 million people per year have been displaced from their homes due to natural disasters
5
Homelessness and the Common Good Increasing cost of housing and a negative view of the homeless decrease chances of recovering from vagrancy The homeless are viewed negatively by society but many do not have a home due to circumstances outside of their control The laziness/poor decisions of a fraction of homeless should not be the reason that all homeless do not receive help Often depend on government assistance or community support while giving little to nothing in return This makes them free riders which are an opponent of the common good

What I Will Do Bought toothpaste, toothbrushes, disposable water bottles, shaving cream, and a razor and plan on putting these things in bags to give out Got a limited amount of these supplies but I feel that it is one of the best ways to improve common good with my limited resources
7
How it Will Impact the Common Good Allow the homeless to become more presentable and stray them from the negative image that many have of a typical homeless person Looking more presentable will increase chances of obtaining support for a house/job if they were to apply This would allow them to become productive members of society rather than remain free riders Less free riders would mean a stronger foundation for the common good
