Urbanization Urbanization is the movement of people from the countryside to the city.

Why are people moving from the country to the city? Discuss two possible reasons with your neighbor.

Do you know the difference between urban and rural?

WHO LIVES IN THE CITY? *Wealthy people working in business and government *Middle class people in business and government *Those who live in poverty *Those who are homeless *Those having different races, religions, and languages ….all kinds of people!

Why is urbanization happening in Asia? For thousands of years, Asian people have lived in poverty working small plots of land growing rice, vegetables,or raising chickens and pigs. Often their small plots of land can’t supply enough food for their family, let alone making extra money. (remember there are over a billion people to feed in China & India)

Why is urbanization happening in Asia? But in the past 20 years, many Asians from rural areas have left their simple life of peasant farming, or agriculture, to go to the city. The promise of jobs, education, and better health care attracts thousands of immigrants to the cities each year.

Does everyone benefit from moving to the city? Not all people who move to the city are successful. – The cost of living (rent/food) can be too much. – Immigrants end up homeless or live in the slums. – Another problem = people lack the skills or training for the good jobs and have to accept low paying jobs. – low paying jobs = people live in poor areas or with several families in one very crowded apartment. 9 Factors that determine why people move and where they go… Push factors make people leave an area. No work, unfertile soil, and war are all reasons why people are pushed out of their homes. Pull factors determine where people will go next. Usually people move to a new area that will benefit them more. (ex. better schools, more jobs, safety, and better housing) Some of you might have been pulled in to Mayfield because of our good school system!

I was thinking…  Less food being grown to feed people on earth  Cities will become overcrowded  Cities will be more polluted  More vehicle transportation harming the ozone layer  Language and religion differences create conflict  Less food being grown to feed people on earth  Cities will become overcrowded  Cities will be more polluted  More vehicle transportation harming the ozone layer  Language and religion differences create conflict What problems will occur in the cities if too many people move there?
