1 Homesick 1.What are all the authors in this unit telling stories about? A time from their childhood that helped shape their identities. 2.The setting in the story “Homesick” is the country of China in the year 1949. 3.Jean Fritz, the author of “Homesick”, (did / did NOT) like living where she grew up. How do you know this? She says she “was on the wrong side of the globe.” 4.What was something about China that Jean loved? The Yangtse River 5.Jean Fritz, the author of “Homesick”, (did / did NOT) like singing the British National Anthem. Why/Why not? She feels like a traitor for being forced to sing the British National Anthem 6.Find a passage from the story that shows how Jean felt uncomfortable in China, even in her own house. “I stood in the hall, trying to catch my breath, and as always I began to feel small. It was a huge hall with ceilings so high it was as if they would have nothing to do with people.” 7.What are the “concessions”? Parts of China that were claimed and run by other countries; they were very different from the lively, crowded, disorganized streets of China.

2 Mami and Papi 8.The setting of “Mami and Papi” is the country of Puerto Rico in the year 1950s. 9. Give two details the author uses to describe the setting in “Mami and Papi“: “We came to Mancun when I was four, to a rectangle of ripped metal sheets on stilts hovering in the middle of a circle of red dirt.” “Its windows and doors were also metal, and as we stepped in, I touched the wall and burned my fingers.” 10.Find a passage from the story that describes what the floor was like in their house when they first moved in (“Mami and Papi”). “…the floor still groaned and sagged to the corners, threatening to collapse and bring the whole house down with it.” 11.Describe Negi’s relationship with her mother (Mami). Negi and her mother disagree about everything; they are very different, but Negi admires her mother’s beauty and grace. She argues with her mother because she wants to stay with Papi to help him rip up the floor but isn’t allowed to at first because her mother thinks it’s dangerous.

3 The Night the Bed Fell 12.The setting in the story “The Night the Bed Fell” is in Columbus, Ohio, in the author’s childhood home 13. Find a passage from the story that helps the reader picture the setting in “The Night the Bed Fell.” “…he closed the attic door behind him and went up the narrow twisting stairs. We later heard ominous creakings as he crawled into bed.” 14.What is the main conflict in “The Night the Bed Fell”? There was a chain of events which caused everyone in the family to think that someone else was in trouble. 15.The atmosphere, or mood, of “The Night the Bed Fell” is comical.
