3 Technician Tools Overview ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) – Occurs when stored up static electricity is discharged in an instantaneous surge of voltage. ESD damage is non recoverable and the most susceptible components are the CMOS and RAM chips. Anti-static Wrist Strap – A strap connecting the technician to the computer and that equalizes the voltage potential between the two to prevent ESD. It is connected to a grounding post or a metal component such as the power supply. Electronic symbol for ground is: Warning: A technician should NEVER wear an ESD wrist strap when working inside a monitor because of high voltages! 4 EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference) – also called EMR (ElectroMagnetic Radiation) is noise caused by electrical devices. Can travel through electrical wires. RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) – Noises that occur in the radio frequency range. Electronic screw drivers kit: this contains all the necessary drivers needed by a technician to loose the screws on an electronic device. Always replace the slot covers for expansion slots that are not being used. This will keep out dust and improve the airflow inside the computer. 5 Creating a Computer Inventory This is an important step when it comes to troubleshooting/assembly/disassembly of a computer for the first time. It helps to keep track of each step taken in the course of the work. A computer inventory is a document that keeps the information about each component and part, also sometime include their specifications. 6 Concept of Diagraming in Assembling/Disassembling of a desktop computer You can sometimes find this very helpful if you are working on a desktop computer for the first time, as it help to keep track of the work and help to know how it was before the commencement. 8 Steps on how to disassemble a computer The first thing you do, is unplug every cable that’s plugged in to your computer. Now that your computer is fully unplugged, move your PC to a clean work space, preferably a carpet. The carpet is better than tile, because screws and other small parts will roll around. Remove outer Shell/Casing Now that the case is off, begin to remove the internal components which is system fan. Remove the CPU fan. Unscrew the power supply. 9 Steps on how to disassemble a computer cont. Remove the hard Disk Drive. Remove the Expansion Card slots. Remove the Connectivity Center Cables Remove RAM (Random Access Memory) Remove Power Button & Power LED + HDD LED Remove the Connectivity Center Remove Motherboard. 11 Assembly Overview The process of assembly is almost the same if not the same as disassembly of a desktop, just in the reverse process of all that has been discussed earlier. An important point to note when assembling/disassembling a desktop computer is to observe the ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) i.e. don’t force anything in or out from its position either on the mother board or any other part of the computer, we might want to know that this is also applicably in other electronics devices. 12 Basic troubleshoot of the desktop Hardware 1.Overheating Symptom: Computer crashes, freezes Solution: Clean out air vents, put filtered material over the inhalation vent, or update BIOS 2. Slow Hard Drive Symptom: Excessive program load times, slow file transfers Solution: Disk defragmentation. 3. Need More Memory Symptom: Sluggish performance when using multiple applications, hang-ups, excessive boot-up time Solution: Upgrade your RAM/hard disk, disk clean-up. 4. Can't Connect to Wireless Network Symptom: No Internet connection, frequent time-outs while Web browsing Solution: Make sure wireless is turned on, smarter software tools, make sure router is broadcasting network name (SSID), update the Wi-Fi driver Tools 6. System Crash Symptom: Desktop won't boot up Solution: Remove the hard drive and place it into an external enclosure. Run Check disk, do a partial formatting. 7. Outdated Video Drivers Symptom: Garbled or distorted video Solution: Download and install the latest/compatible drivers Basic troubleshoot of the desktop Hardware Cont. Unresponsive monitor Symptoms: Monitor screen is black Solutions: there are a lot possibilities to this problem so we take it a step at a time  Check to see if the computer turned on.  Is the computer turned on? There is a light on the CPU. If the computer is on, it will be lit.  Check to see if the monitor getting power.  If no lights appear on the front of the monitor at all, it is not getting any power from the power source. Check to see if ALL plugs are secure.  Power cord from the computer to the power strip.  Power strip to the wall socket. Basic troubleshoot of the desktop Hardware Cont. 15  Check to see if the Power Strip turned on.  There is a light on the strip. If the strip is on, the indictor light will be on.  Check to see if the monitor getting a signal from the computer.  There is a light on the monitor. If the monitor is on, it will be lit. If it is turned on, check the contrast and brightness buttons to see if they have been tampered with.  A green light on the front of the monitor would indicate that it is getting a signal from the computer. 16  An orange light would indicate there is not signal from the computer. Make sure the computer is on and you see lights on the front of it. Check the cable that runs from the monitor to the computer to see if it has worked loose.  Check to see if the brightness has been turned entirely down.  Make sure you check the brightness and contrast buttons or settings on the monitor.  to see if the computer in Power Save or Sleep mode. 17  Check Move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard to see if the computer will "wake-up."  Check to see if all peripherals plugged in.  Verify that all cables and cords leading in to and out of your computer to insure they are all in tight and not disconnected.
