Al “Scarface” Capone- The Early Years Most Famous American Gangster Born January 17, 1899 Grew up in a rough neighborhood in Brooklyn New York Quit School after the 6 th grade, but was very intelligent Worked as a bouncer and Bartender as a member of the 5 Points Gang in New York First Arrest in 1918 for killing two men Gangland Etiquette- -No one admitted to anything Moved to Chicago in 1919

The Chicago Years Began working for Crime Boss John Torrio By 1922, became Torrio's number 2 man in bootlegging, saloons and gambling After Torrio was wounded in a gang attack, Capone took over the Empire Capone’s House outside of Chicago

Capone in Charge Capone was well liked by his men Between 1925 and 1930, he controlled speakeasies, bookie joints, gambling houses, brothels, nightclubs, horse tracks, distilleries, and breweries. Worth over $100,000,000

The Eventual Fall Mayor William “Big Bill” Thompson felt Capone was bad for his image Hired a new police chief By, 1929 Capone moved to Florida but still ran operations in Chicago Several Attempts were made on his life Extensive Spy Network Metropole Hotel on Michigan Avenue. The hotel served as his base of operations until 1928.

Do Not Pass Go and Go Directly to Jail Capone was arrested for a 2 nd time in 1926 for killing three men, but was acquitted once again Arrested in May 1929 for carrying a Gun By 1930, Capone became Public Enemy Number One Arrested for Tax Evasion

The Crime Boss on Trial 1927 Sullivan ruling claimed that illegal profits were taxable Capone never filed Income Tax from 1925- 1930 Indicted in 1931 Charged on 23 accounts and convicted on only 5 Capone with the Chief of Police

From the South to San Francisco Sent to a Federal Prison in Atlanta Was extremely influential in the prison Sent to Alcatraz Was released due to good behavior in 1939 Died in 1947 in his home in Florida
