Specified Content: Progressive Era Amendments: income tax, state elections for senators, prohibition, women’s suffrage, The policies of Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson (especially the “square deal”), The limits of Progressivism: the issue of social justice, extension of Jim Crow, the situation of African Americans (Theme KQ3) State Standards: Strand 1 Concept 7 PO 1, 2, 3

2 Progressive Reforms In 1901, President McKinley will be assassinated and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt will take over. Roosevelt continues to push for progressive reforms and tells the people they will get a “Square Deal”.

3 He will push for laws like the Pure Food and Drug Act and he will offer government arbitration to help settle labor disputes. Other Progressive reforms included the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th Amendments passed between 1913 and 1920.

4 The 16th Amendment will allow the Federal government the right to collect an income tax from the people.

5 The 17th Amendment will change how Senators to Congress are chosen. Before this they were chosen by the State Legislatures, now they will be chosen by the popular vote of the people.

6 The 18th Amendment will prohibit the production, sale and transportation of alcohol. The 19th Amendment will allow all citizens the right to vote regardless of sex (gender).

7 Activity Write down the following questions on a separate sheet of paper: 1.Who wrote this and when did they write it? 2.What is this passage describing? 3.Why did the author write this? (1 paragraph)

8 Excerpt from The Jungle by Upton Sinclair (1906) There would be meat that had tumbled out on the floor, in the dirt and sawdust, where the workers had tramped and spit uncounted billions of consumption germs. There would be meat stored in great piles in rooms; and the water from leaky roofs would drip over it, and thousands of rats would race about on it. It was too dark in these storage places to see well, but a man could run his hand over these piles of meat and sweep off handfuls of the dried dung of rats. These rats were nuisances, and the packers would put poisoned bread out for them; they would die, and then rats, bread, and meat would go into the hoppers together.
