Objective: Apply trig and vectors to real world situations

Review During a military training exercise, an unmanned target drone has been detected on a radar screen following a path represented by the vector equation X=(3, 4) + t(-1, 0). A surface to air missile is launched to intercept it and destroy it. This missile is following a trajectory represented by X = (2, 2) + t(1, 2). Write the parametric equations for the path of the target drone and the missile. Will the missile intercept the target drone?

Applications Example: A ship leaving port sails for 75 miles in a direction 35 0 north of due east. Find the magnitude of the vertical and horizontal components. x = |v|cos θy = |v| sin θ

Applications An airplane is flying due west at a velocity of 100 m/s. The wind is blowing out of the south at 5 m/s. What is the magnitude of the airplane’s resultant velocity?

Applications Two rodeo clowns are restraining a bull to return it to the paddocks. Suppose one clown is exerting a force of 270 N due north and the other is pulling with force of 360 N due east. What is the resultant force on the bull? Find the angle the resultant force makes with the east- west axis.

Practice Sketch the given vectors. a force of 43 N acting on an object at an angle of 53 0 with the ground a force of 342 pounds acting on an object while a force of 454 pounds acts on the same object at an angle of 94 0 with the first force

Practice Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector for the diagram 65 mph 50 mph 300 0
