1
Thumbnail Sketch??? What is that?
2
Get your folder. Set up your name plaque. Get out a pencil and your logo sketches. Place everything else under your desk
3
To develop their concepts and ideas, artists create thumbnail sketches, or concept sketches.
4
By creating multiple sketches…
5
their ideas gradually EVOLVE, getting better and better.
6
Here an artist has drawn thumbnails for a bicycle… and it’s seat.
7
Artists also draw thumbnail sketches to determine the most interesting composition for an artwork…
8
… and to record the essence of an idea or scene quickly, before it is lost.
9
Thumbnail sketches are usually drawn loosely with a pen or pencil and are no larger than an inch or two … …and they are generally quite rough and may only make sense to the artist.
10
A Thumbnail Sketch is not… a fully rendered pencil drawing,
11
or a full color mini-version of the final artwork.
12
So, WHY make them???
13
They are a VITAL planning tool.
14
They help you develop multiple compositions quickly.
15
But most importantly, because…
16
…your first sketch, plan, or idea is almost never the best one…
17
Your ideas will progressively get better and better!
