5 Founded in 1997. Based in the Hague (Holland) The role of the OPCW is to supervise the destruction of chemical weapons by signatories to the Chemical Weapons Convention (1997) As of 2013, 190 states have joined the convention and approximately 78% of declared chemical weapons stockpiles have been destroyed. Syria is not a signatory to the convention, but on October 1 it allowed OPCW inspectors to identify and destroy Syrian chemical weapons stockpiles.
