Example (ABSORBER) Problem statement: CO2 is absorbed into propylene carbonate in a packed column. The inlet gas stream is 20 mol% CO2 and 80 mol% methane. The gas stream flows at a rate of 7200 m 3 /h and the column operates at 60 °C and 60.1 atm. The inlet solvent flow is 2000 kmol/hr. Use HYSYS to determine the concentration of CO2 (mole %) in the exit gas stream, the column height (m) and the column diameter (m).

Select your components in Match
5
Select Sour PR>Enter to Simulation Environment
6
Enter simulation Environment
8
Select the Absorber icon from the pallet and click inside the simulation environment
9
Double click on the absorber and file in the inlet stream and exit streams as in the yellow area
10
Click Next> fill in top and bottom pressure 60.1 atm
11
Click next and fill in the top and bottom stage temperature
12
Close the absorber column Input Expert menu, notice that the stream are light blue
13
Double click on inlet gas stream and solvent stream and fill the temperature, pressure and composition
14
The solvent stream is fully specified
15
Gases in The other inlet stream “Gases In” should also be defined in a similar way. For the “Gases In” stream, enter the composition as methane - 0.8, CO2 - 0.2 & propylene carbonate - 0. Specify Molar Flow as 7200 m3/s (Note that HYSYS will convert the flow rate to kgmole/h as indicated in figure 7d). See to that the “Gases In” stream also changes to dark blue in color.
16
Click on the Gas in stream and enter T, P, Composition and flow rate
