WHAT ARE BACKUPS? Backups are the last line of defense against hardware failure, floods or fires the damage caused by a security breach or just accidental deletion of data. A copy of data that can be used to restore and recover the data is called a backup. Backups let us restore data after a failure.
3
WHY MAKE BACKUPS ? Backups protect you against many failures such as: Hardware failure, for example,a damaged disk drive or permanent loss of a server. Media failure. Accidental file deletion. Theft and natural disaster. Catastrophic virus or spy ware infections, if we have to erase our hard disk and reinstall everything.
4
WHERE TO BACKUP OUR FILES ? The following are some storage devices and locations to consider. External hard drive CD DVD USB flash drive Online backup and storage service
5
HOW TO BACK UP YOUR FILES? When we make backup copies of our information, a simple copy and paste works well. However today’s most operating systems also provide a backups of the data on the computer.
6
TYPES OF DATA BACKUPS. Backup is copied data kept at different places / media that can be used in case of emergency. There can be two forms of data backups: FULL BACKUP DIFFERENTIAL BACKUP
7
FULL BACKUP A full backup contains all the data in a specific database or set of file- groups or files and logs to allow for recovering that data.
8
DIFFERENTIAL BACKUP A differential backup is based on the full back of the data. This is known as the base of the differential, or the differential base. A differential backup contains only the data that has changed since the differential base. Differential backups that are taken fairly soon after the base of a full backup. Therefore, using differential backups can speed up the process of making frequent backups to decrease the risk of data loss. Full backup of a read /write data forms the differential base and the successive backups that store only the changed data after the full backup are known as differential backups.

ONLINE BACKUP Online backup is a type of offsite data backup. Any files or folders are backed up onto a remote server,or a network connection. In the event that we lose a file, we simply have to connect to the remote computer to restore it. In this way, we can access our data from any where in the world-making it very convenient for those who travel and business with many locations.
10
ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE DATA BACKUP There are many advantages, such as: By having our data stored on a remote hard drive, we run little to no risk of losing our data as a result of fire, theft or any disaster. Our data is safe; our computer encrypts our files before sending them, and files are secured with password protection No hardware to maintain or repair the backup.
11
…advantages Backups are done automatically, making our time more productive. Offers more features than certain data backup software, such as remote data access and synchronising. Data is available anywhere in the world at any time.
