Before we get started, can you: Name all of the Hawaiian Islands? Name one famous Hawaiian? Identify the major export of Hawaii? State when Hawaii became a state? Determine the major religion of Hawaii? Analyze one major difference in the culture of Hawaii and your own?

In the Beginning… 1 st inhabitants were Polynesians from the Marquesas between 300 CE and 1000CE Later wave came from Tahiti around 1300 who introduced a line of high chiefs and human sacrifice

European Contact James Cook was 1 st European (British Explorer) to arrive in 1798 He was killed on his 2 nd visit When more Europeans arrived they brought disease and the native population plunged American missionaries arrived in 1820; converted chiefs and rest of population to Protestant Christianity; also taught “civilized ways”

Kingdoms and Statehood Hawaii was a kingdom from 1810-1893 Republic of Hawaii from 1894-1898 Became a US territory in 1898 Finally became a state on August 21, 1959
