1
The Element of Value The lightness and darkness of tones (grays) and colors.
2
Value Value makes objects appear more real because it imitates natural light. When showing value in a work of art, you will need a LIGHT SOURCE.
3
Vocabulary Light Source- area in which light is originating from. Gradation- gradual changes from light to dark. Highlight- the brightest light reflections on a subject. Shadows- area where light doesn’t hit. Cast shadows- the shadows made on the ground by an object.
5
Shading Techniques used to achieve values in your work Blending/Smudging Hatching Cross Hatching Stippling Scumbling Random Hatching Contour hatching
6
Blending making values blend smoothly and gradually together. Also, referred to as “Smudging”.
7
Hatching creating values using parallel lines.
8
Cross-Hatching creating values with lines that cross one another.
9
Stippling adding values by using dots.
10
Scumbling adding values with a meandering line, layers of small scribble-like marks.
11
Random Hatching uses layers of short, straight marks built up to show value or texture.
12
Contour Hatching creating values with lines that follow the contour of a shape to create a 3-D effect.
13
Examples of shading Techniques
14
Graphite Pencils H pencils have harder leads and are used to make lighter values. B pencils have softer leads and are used to make darker values. By using a variety of pencils different values can be achieved.
15
Value Scales refers to the gradual movement from black to gray to white A guide to creating a range of value, good pieces of art have a full range of value Tints: light values Shades: dark values
16
A good graphite drawing should have at least 7 values in it.
17
Showing strong differences in light and dark creates contrast.
28
Your Assignments 1.You will complete 4 value scales with (2H) (2B) pencil. 2.You will complete 3 pencil shading worksheets. 3.You will plan for and complete a large scale sphere.

Spheres in Art
38
Creating a Focal Point in Art- Achieving Emphasis, a Principle of Design.
39
Final Project Complete at least 7 Spheres and 1 Insect in your composition using the following guidelines: Spheres should be your main subject. You must include at least one detailed insect in your work. You should follow the guidelines in the Emphasis/Focal Point presentation to create a focal point in your work. You must use graphite pencils and include a minimum of 7 values in your work. Work should be high quality with excellent craftsmanship. Final paper size is 12”x18”.
