Sec. 2.2 More Graphs and Displays Mr. Ricks Madison High School
2
The Area Principle The area principle is a guideline for creating graphs which basically says that the area occupied by a part of the graph should correspond to the magnitude of the value it represents Violations of the area principle are a common way that statistics are used to misrepresent information

Is there a difference?

Quantitative Data Sets Stem-and-leaf plots and dot plots are both commonly used to plot quantitative data You can see some examples on pp. 46-48, but we won’t worry about these plots in this class
6
Qualitative Data Sets Pie Charts show categories as slices of a whole Bar Charts show the distribution of a categorical variable
7
Making a Pie Chart or Bar Chart in Excel is nice and easy! Type the categories into a column Type the counts in the column next to the categories Select both columns and insert the appropriate chart Make sure your chart title and axes labels are appropriate Excel Example
8
Scatter Plots Scatter plots are used when there are two quantitative data sets that are related The data sets can be thought of as variables, and a scatter plot can help us see how the variables are related Scatter plots are among the most common displays for data
9
Creating a Scatter Plot Identify which variable is independent (this will go on your x-axis) The dependent variable will go on your y-axis Enter your independent variable data into a column Enter the dependent variable data next to it Select both columns and insert a scatter plot Add appropriate title and axes labels
10
Time Series Often data is gathered over intervals of time Ex: A record of the average rainfall in Rexburg by month Time will be on the x-axis (independent) The other variable will be on the y-axis Create chart the same way as a scatter plot, but select the option to connect the points Label axes and chart appropriately

Assignment Pg. 55 #20,21,24,25,26,27 Add a sheet in Excel for each one on the same spreadsheet where you completed your examples Create a data table and the appropriate chart (including all labels) for each problem
