LOFAR/SKA Meeting, Bonn, 2009 Oct 27 James M Anderson 5 /13 Network ● Reasonable connection to Groningen finally realized in August ● LOFAR International network meeting in Frankfurt on Sep 15 ● After some problems with bandwidth, VLANs, and so on, we switched over to a full 10 GE connection from Ef to Bn ● Curently connected to Groningen and LOFAR Blue Gene for normal LOFAR operations – At least, whenever they haven't done something to break the connection ● Continual spec change on network design and requirements

LOFAR/SKA Meeting, Bonn, 2009 Oct 27 James M Anderson 10 /13 The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly ● Since the spring: ● Stations on the ground, connected to Groningen ● First pulsar measurements from real LOFAR stations ● First fringes from LOFAR stations ● First images from LOFAR stations ● But there are huge delays ● Only a handful of stations available ● Software development slow

LOFAR/SKA Meeting, Bonn, 2009 Oct 27 James M Anderson 11 /13 LAD Meeting Three Weeks Ago ● Rate of bug fixes constant, while rate of new bugs reported is increasing ● “Busy Weeks” placing too large of a strain on the Dwingeloo technical/software groups – Must back off on busy weeks ● Many necessary commissioning tasks have not been done because the software is not yet available and/or the hardware is not yet in place ● MS 3 delayed until at least 2010 March ● LAD agreement to give highest priority to getting ready for MS 3 – Tasks, development, commissioning, personnel time allocations which conflict with MS3 put on hold

LOFAR/SKA Meeting, Bonn, 2009 Oct 27 James M Anderson 13 /13 LOFAR Proposal Cycle 0 ● Deadline was during the night of 2009 Sep 30 ● Two proposal types requested – Cat I (Early Access) commissioning proposals – Cat II (Long Term) guaranteed access, KSP science submissions ● 96 proposals received – Initial estimate: factor of 10 oversubscription (may come down as piggybacking and subarray processing possibilities investigated) ● Technical Review Committee formed – 10 people (2 external to ASTRON) – Will review technical details of proposals, discuss at 2009 Nov 02 meeting ● LOFAR Program Committee (TAC) being formed – Up to 16 people, partially taken from Westerbork PC – Will meet in early December
