AARHUS UNIVERSITY November 2013 Villum Research Station Henrik Skov Professor, Research Director Morten Rasch and Bent Lorenzen Department of Environmental Science (ENVS) Aarhus University Arctic Research Centre, Aarhus University Adjunct Professor at Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, University of Southern Denmark

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Grant from Villum Foundation 70,500,000 DKK http://envs.au.dk/en/research/facilities/villumresearchstation/

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY The new station will be open year round ›Base Station ›Mobile Station ›Air Station

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY All three sub-stations will be equipped with state of the art instruments ›Well approved instruments ›State of the art instrumentation ›New development and custom built instruments

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Station Nord, Greenland 81 o 36’N 16 o 39’ W Peary Land

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Prinsesse Ingeborgs Halvø

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Vision ›The infrastructure is envisioned as a novel platform to bring together researchers across scientific disciplines to set new standards for Arctic research. Internationally recognized experts will be gathered with the goal of significantly improving our understanding of how climate changes in the Arctic may induce changes in the cryosphere, oceanosphere, geosphere and atmosphere and thereby influence ecosystems and biogeochemical processes.

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Aim ›The aim is to establish a unique state-of-the art research infrastructure in the High Arctic for investigating climate change and its effects on atmospheric, oceanographic, biological and geological conditions and processes in the Arctic.

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY ~100 m 2

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Mobile Station ›The aim of the mobile Station is to do atmospheric, terrestrial, sea-ice and marine research away from Station Nord (demanding overnight)

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Mobile station (example Antarctic, Weaterhaven)

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Air Station ›The aim of the Air Station is to provide a platform for studies of vertical profiles of the atmosphere to an altitude of a few kilometers, and to make aerial observations of snow, sea-ice and the terrestrial landscape by remote sensing.

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY UAVs ›To be used for collecting scientific data that are hard to get using other platforms. Of particular interest is to apply UAVs to make missions that have previously been impossible.

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Station Nord – digital cyber infrastruktur Equipment ›File server with large data storing capacity - 30TB, stable operation ›Application server for efficient analysis of large amounts of data ›Remote sensing software license ›GPS reference station ( available from DTU) ›RTK GPS – high pracisions Field equipment (ruggedized to Arctic conditions) ›Multispectral Imagery - Recording of major part of Prinsesse Ingeborgs Ø, World View- (8-bands + panchromatic, 0.5-2 m resolution) ›Elevation model - LiDAR recording of Prinsesse Ingeborgs Ø – (0.5 points/m2 = 1,6 m resolution) ›Image database with SPOT/Sentinel, ESA and NASA Earth Observation Data Remote sensing data Level 1: Finest resolution, imagery and LiDaR data Level 4: Coarse resolution, imagery

7 November 2013 Henrik Skov AARHUS UNIVERSITY Station Nord – digital cyber infrastruktur Equipment ›File server with large data storing capacity - 30TB, stable operation ›Application server for efficient analysis of large amounts of data ›Remote sensing software license ›GPS reference station ( available from DTU) ›RTK GPS – high precisions Field equipment (ruggedized to Arctic conditions) ›Multispectral Imagery - Recording of major part of Part of Peary land, World View- (8- bands + panchromatic, 0.5-2 m resolution) ›Elevation model - LiDAR recording of Part of Peary land – (0.5 points/m2 = 1,6 m resolution) ›Image database with SPOT/Sentinel, ESA and NASA Earth Observation Data Remote sensing data Level 1: Finest resolution, imagery and LiDaR data Level 4: Coarse resolution, imagery
