Aims of this Rapid Communication To raise awareness of the BTBC programme To explain the Leeds BTBC pilot in more detail To identify the other 2 psychiatry specific pilots within BTBC programme

Better Training, Better Care (BTBC) Work programme of Health Education England (HEE) Identify, pilot, evaluate & disseminate good education & training practice Improve curricula, underpin education & training frameworks, for fit for purpose training for safe & effective patient care Nine workstreams: pilots, role of trainee & trainer, workforce planning, career guidance, technology enhanced learning, improving, commissioning and delivering training

Better Training, Better Care Pilots 16 NHS Trusts pilot projects awarded & meeting key recommendations from Time for Training and/or Foundation for Excellence 3 Mental Health Trusts involved: –Leeds York Partnership NHS FT (LYPFT) –Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS FT (TEWFT) –East London NHS FT

Better Training Better Care Pilot - Teeside August 2012 1 Project based across Teeside – focused upon trainees new to Psychiatry (FY1, FY2, GP,CT1) 19 posts – “control” area Durham Identified mini curriculum of key psychiatric skills to obtain Front loading of direct involvement with consultant trainer – structured progression over first 4-6 weeks moving from observing consultant consultant observed reporting back / CBD (and hence greater autonomy)

Better Training Better Care Pilot - Teeside August 2012 2 Training in clinical skills for trainees, refreshers for assessment skills and also templates and tools to aid assessment for trainers Measures of progress and outcomes via structured assessments and feedback forms from trainees, trainers and patients

LYPFT is BTBC Psychiatry pilot site It is maximising psychiatry training opportunities by increasing daytime working for trainees alongside improved supervision & handover out of hours. In addition it will enhance psychiatry experience for undergraduates and FY doctors, in conjunction with the Trust Summer School and sixth formers work experience placements, hopes to increase psychiatry recruitment.

Summary BTBC is a HEE programme aiming, by working with Trusts and partner organisations, to improve quality of training & learning for professionals, for the benefit of patient care.
