Painswick “THE QUEEN OF THE COLDWOLDS”

Churchs and Religion Painswick has the most oldest buildings in Great Britain. The oldest one is the Parish Church of Sanit Mary of The Virgin. It was built between 1042 and 1066 by Ernesi. The Chapel of Our Lady and St Teresa opened for Roman Catholic worship on 4 August 1934. Its original dedication was to St Theresa of Lisieux. On 15 June 1941 it was almost completely destroyed by a German bomb. It was subsequently restored and somewhat enlarged, by Peter Falconer and Partners, and re-opened in 1956. It is still used on every week.

Rococo Garden It was desinged in the 1740s as flamboyant pleasure garden for Benjaming Hyett to entertain guest. Follies nestle in a hidden valley sorrounded by magnificent Cotswolds views. A Large Kitchen Garden producend many crops that are used in the garden’s own restaurant.

The ghost of King Charles 1st It is documented that King Charles shelters at the Painswick Court House. He stayed there during the Siege of Gloucester in 1643. His ghosts has been seen on numerous occasions in the grounds of the Court House along with some of his men.
